ISC II qualifier - facts, rumours from Sydenham UPDATED

Some information from the qualifier from Sydenham this weekend. Keep reading until the bottom!

Facts:

  • WC Electric (0-2), Valley Raiders (1-2) and Blackburn (1-2) all failed to make it to Sunday.
  • Team Easton defeated Enterprise, Quyon and then Donnaconna in the winner's bracket final to get the 3pm berth in the final. Easton is guaranteed an invite to the ToC in Kitchener as then can finish no lower than second. Not sure how they did or who they played in the final. UPDATE: Team Easton won the tourney for the third straight year, defeating Donnaconna 9-0 in five innings in the final.
  • Carp I4C Victory made it Sunday, finishing tied for 5th with a 2-2 record. I4C lost to Enterprise, then beat Northern Explorers, then beat Blackburn, losing to Waterdown early on Sunday.
  • Quyon also made it to Sunday, finishing fourth with help from their bye and a 2-2 record. Quyon defeated Scarborough, lost to Easton, beat Scarborough again then lost to Waterdown.
  • Waterdown was playing Donnaconna for the right to play Easton in the final. Not sure who won this. UPDATE: Donnaconna beat Waterdown 3-2 to make it to the final.
  • Other teams playing that didn't make it to Sunday were the Northern Explorers (0-2) a native team from northern Ontario, Kingston Cowboys (2-2) and Enterprise Oasis Pools (1-2).
  • Word from fitzroyfastball's spies at the diamond on Sunday was that Quyon and Scarborough got into a bench clearing brawl in their second game. I wasn't there to witness it, but the story goes that the game was tied after seven. Then Quyon went up 4-0 in the top of the eighth. A subsequent play at the plate had Joran Graham of Quyon bowl over the Scarborough catcher at the dish, and tempers flared and the benches cleared. Apparently the game was ended, and Quyon awarded the win. However, Graham was suspended for the next game against Waterdown, which the Flyers then lost.

Rumour:

  • Some were saying that Scarborough and Donnaconna (Quebec City) are both essentially Junior teams that are going to the Canadian Junior Nationals. Some were saying that even if they are offered berths for Kitchener, they would not go. This means that Quyon would have a very good chance at getting an invite, and Carp also has an outside shot at getting a call for the ToC.

Steve Walman was ejected from Blackburn's second game for saying, "I hear you; I just don't agree with you."

He's such a hot-head.

Why does that get you kicked out, no swearing or disrepect as far as I'm concerned. That isn't being a hot head, that is wanting to win the game, if the ump makes a bad call, you have to let him know just nothing over the top. I have seen people get away with a lot more than that.

I'm not sure Joe, but I had assumed the first comment was sarcasm. As in the guy that sent the comment couldn't believe Wally got kicked out for something so minor.

We were playing Blackburn in that game, and Steve definitely wasn't screaming at the ump. He was disputing balls and strikes, but he certainly wasn't using foul language, at least that I could hear and I was 60 feet away coaching first.

Joe, I would suspect the person who left that post is being somewhat sarcastic. I think anyone who knows Steve knows he's one of the gentle giants in the game but a competitor too. I'm sure whoever left that post was at the tournament and is probably shaking their head in disbelief at what would seem to be a rather quick trigger finger by the umpire. I'll e-mail you later regarding what we talked about on Sunday.

I guess I could have made 1 comment but I keep having little thing pop up, lol

Scarborough was not going to accept an invite if they did qualify, they were there only as a tune up for the Jr elims, however, they did have 3 or 4 pickups that were overage, so that doesn't make much sense to me. Donnacona was NOT a Jr team, I talked to Francis Leclair on Saturday. They were 4 or 5 players from the ST-Leonard team, but they are intending to go according to Leclaire. He is not in charge of the team though, that is not 100%

To clarify the bench clearing brawl, Joran ran the catcher over, (maybe he shouldn't have) but their coach sent the team out (17 players), then got in the middle of it himself. No punches were thrown as the crazy Quyon team had to play the next game against Waterdown and we only had 10 players. Joran was told he could play the next game and then once we started to warm up, the ISC II officials came over and told us that he was kicked out of that game as well, a huge blow to our team.

All in all, a great experience for the Flyers, we had a blast, and ended up where many thought we couldn't make it too. Hopefully we get the call!

Joe for the 3rd time this morning!
