Au Sable Report - "Gordon Oil/20 Main"

from Tony Riches

A combination squad made up of GOFL players from Easton and Manotick, a couple of Peterborough players and a little help from the locals entered the AuSable tournament this past weekend. Thanks to the generosity of local businessmen Jon Gordon and Theron Snow the team played as Gordon Oil/20 Main.

Following an extremely touching opening ceremony, a tribute to local athlete Johnny Nixon, who played in the tournament last July but is now stricken with ALS, Friday night saw the team face CPI of Oswego, NY. Dan Konkle threw a one-hitter and Craig Buttars hit a solo homer to lead the way defeating one of the ISC`s top ranked teams by a score of 2-1.

Saturday afternoon Gordon/20 Main played Donnacona, QC and Jeff Murphy took a turn throwing a solid one-hit shutout and Dan Jessiman led a constant offensive attack with a homer in a 7-0 victory.

Their 2-0 record gave the team a #2 seed going into Sunday`s single elimination format and a tough draw against a very good St Leonard squad and pitcher Francois Leclaire. Dave Tubman broke a scoreless tie with a solo homer and Calvin Medynski drove in a run with a single and scored a run to stake Gordon/20 Main and starter Jeff Murphy to a 3-0 lead entering the 7th inning. But the scrappy St Leonard team managed to mount an attack and used an infield hit, a bloop and two singles to tie the game and force a pitching change. Dan Konkle entered and following a walk, St Leonard got another bloop hit that just eluded a diving Dan Jessiman and scored two runs to gave the Express a 5-3 lead. The Oilers tried to mount a comback in the bottom half of the final inning with a Dave Tubman single but, for the second time in the game, Jessiman's long fly was caught at the fence, this time for the final out.

As usual, this tournament was extremely well run and the locals were very hospitable and great company. Any team looking for a midseason event would be hard pressed to find a better place to spend a weekend.

I would second that Tony, the hospitality there is unbelieveable. Never have been treated better at a tourney, very well run!

I would think that the Quyon Flyers will be making the trek to Au Sable next summer!
