Carp over WC Electric 3-1
I4C Victory defeated WC Electric by a score of 3-1 on Thursday night in Carp.
Trevor Wood had the pitching win, throwing all seven innings. Brad Porter took the loss, also throwing a good game.
Carp had a two out walk from Kyle Gourgon in the first inning. The young shortstop stole second, but was left stranded there.
In the second, I4C scored the first run of the game. Brooks Paziuk reached on an error. Trevor Wood attempted to lay down a sacrifice bunt and popped up. Then Pete Petit tried a sac bunt as well, and also popped up for the second out. However, Paziuk caught the ‘Trics infield napping, tagged up on the popped bunt, and moved to second. Eric Colvin then came through with a clutch double to score Paziuk and put the home team up 1-0.
Wood retired the first nine batters he faced in order. The only excitement for WC in the first three innings came in the form of the DK side show in the top of the third, as the players, fans and umps were entertained by a certain #27 from Team Easton completing a complete circuit of the infield on a pocket bike. See below for an “artist’s conception” of the entertainer.
In the bottom of the third, Gourgon again reached base with two out, this time legging out an infield single, but this time when he attempted to steal second, Beef Johnson threw him out.
Michael Cavanagh had a two out double for WC Electric in the top of the fourth to break up the no-hitter, but was left stranded.
Porter retired the side in the fourth and fifth innings, as the score remained 1-0 for Carp.
WC Electric tied the game in the top of the sixth. Steve Cavanagh reached base on an infield hit on which I4C shortstop Gourgon made a diving stab and just about came up with the play. Cavanagh stole second to put himself in scoring position – then Trevor Barton hit a two-out double to cash the younger Cavanagh. With the game tied, and Barton on second, Carp Coach had a conference with Wood and Victory decided to intentionally walk Mike Cavanagh to face clean-up hitter Shawn Rebertz. The move worked, as Rebertz grounded out to end the inning.
Carp came back to score two in the top of the sixth, as Al Read hit a one out single and was sacrificed to second by Gourgon. Matt McNish then drove a ball to short, which Mike Cavanagh knocked down and prevented a run, but runners were now on the corners. With Paziuk at the plate, a wild pitch allowed McNish to move to second. Paziuk subsequent hit a dribbler in front of the plate, which was fielded by Porter, but popped out of the first baseman’s glove, allowing Read and McNish to score to put Carp up 3-1.
Despite a Beef Johnson double to lead off the seventh, WC Electric could not muster another run and the game ended 3-1 for the home side.
Trevor Wood threw seven innings, allowed one earned run, four hits, struck out eight and had one intentional walk. Carp made no errors.
Brad Porter threw six innings, allowed three runs, none of which were earned, four hits, struck out seven and walked one. WC Electric made two costly errors both of which resulted in runs.
Offensively for I4C Victory, Al Read was 1-3 with a run scored. Kyle Gourgon was 1-1 with a walk, a stolen base and a sac bunt. Matt McNish was 1-3 with a run scored and Eric Colvin was 1-2 with a double and an RBI.
For the ‘Trics, Mike Cavanagh was 1-2 with a double and an intentional walk, Beef Johnson was 1-3 with a double, Steve Cavanagh was 1-2 with a stolen base and a run scored, while Trevor Barton was 1-3 with a double and an RBI.
