Easton downs Stittsville 11-2 on Wednesday night

from Sam Oliver

The 11 – 2 score is not indicative of how tight this ball game actually was … until the 7th Inning.

Darren Featherstone toed the rubber for Stittsville and only allowed 1 hit through the first 6 innings. Unfortunately, he struggled with the strike zone all night. Easton opened the scoring in the second inning without recording a hit. With one out in the inning, a hit batsman and 5 free passes handed Team Easton a 3 run lead.

Stittsville managed to get one run back in the bottom of the third. John Craig smacked a 2 out single to start the attack and advanced to second when Dan Jessiman walked. Darren Featherstone followed that with a single up the middle scoring Craig from second. Sam Oliver walked to load the bases, but Easton ace Dan Konkle struck out the next 56er batter to end the threat.

The 56ers pulled within 1 run in the bottom half of the 5th. Scott Herriot lead off the inning with a walk, stole second, advanced to third on a 1 out ground ball off the bat of Dan Jessiman, and scored on a Konkle wild pitch.

At the end of 6 innings the score remained Easton 3, Stittsville 2. However, Easton would send 13 batters to the plate in the seventh, scoring 8 runs on 5 hits, 1 hit batsman, and 4 walks. The attack was punctuated by a Dave Tubman grand slam home run which capped the scoring. Tubman also made a sparkling defensive play in the second inning, hauling in a deep fly ball with his back turned to home plate reminiscent of “The Catch” made by Willie Mays in the ’54 World Series.

The pitching lines on the night:

Dan Konkle – 7IP, 2R 2ER, 2H, 5BB, 14K, 2WP
