Orleans ties WC Electric 3-3 in opener

Orleans Gators and West Carleton Electric played to a 3-3 tie in GOFL action on Thursday night in Orleans.

Chad Hargrove went the distance for Orleans in their first game of the season, while Bud Hanlon (4 innings) and Brad Porter (3 innings) shared the ball for Fitzroy.

WC Electric scored two in the top of the first. Jon Daley led off with a walk and stole second base. Trevor Barton then stroked a 3 and 0 pitch over the left field fence to put the 'Trics up 2-0. Michael Cavanagh and Troy Wilson also had singles but were stranded.

Orleans responded with a run in the bottom of the first frame. Jordan Adams hit a one-out single and scored on a Matt Bowman triple to right to that took a wild bounce to the fence.

The Gators took a one run lead in the bottom of the fourth. Matt Alkerton and Matt Bowman walked to start the inning. Bud Hanlon struck out the next two batters, but Brian Friesen hit a 2RBI double to left-centre to put the home team up 3-2.

Fitzroy tied the game in the top of the sixth. Trevor Barton led off with a double. Neil Murphy then walked. Mike Cavanagh hit into a fielder's choice, moving Barton third. Steve Johnson then hit a grounder to second and Barton beat the throw to tie the game at 3. Hargrove was able to get the next two outs to end the threat.

Orleans had a chance in the bottom of the sixth when Brad Porter walked Matt Bowman and Chad Hargrove with one out, but Porter retired the next two batters on K's.

In the top of the seventh Jason Cope led off the inning with a walk and took second on a wild pitch. However he was stranded there as Hargrove struck out the next three batters in succession.

With Orleans unable to score in the bottom of the seventh, the game ended in a draw. The game was error free and both teams only combined for 7 hits.
