Quyon 8 Manotick 0

from Tony Riches
Quyon travelled to Manotick and showed the home team how to play defence Wednesday night, playing errorless ball in an 8-0 victory. The Printers made seven, that`s right seven, fielding errors and stirred in a couple of baserunning blunders for effect in turning a tight fastball game into a blowout by giving up a clumsy seven run sixth inning. Trevor Lahey tried to battle through, keeping the game 1-0 through five despite the first four errors behind him. Lahey was solid, surrendering only an RBI single to winning pitcher Matt Greer in the fourth inning but three consecutive Manotick errors to start the sixth opened the floodgates and the Flyers took full advantage. Dennis McLeary and Nick Armitage both drove in 2 runs in the inning before Lyle Schell made his first pitching appearance of the season to record the final out. The same Manotick team that rapped out fourteen hits last Wednesday was shut down by a solid performance from Greer and his team turned two double plays to help out.

Quyon;
Young 3-4, 3B, 2R
D McLeary 2-4, 2 RBI
Armitage 1-4, 3B, 2 RBI
Greer 6IP, 3H, 0R, 2BB, 4K

Manotick;
Lahey 5.2IP, 8H, 7R, 0ER, 2BB, 10K

Quyon downs Manotick 8 - 0 in six innings

The Flyers travelled to Manotick to take on the Printers Wednesday night. Matt "Cooney" Greer got the nod for Quyon while Manotick countered with Trevor Lahey. Greer threw all six innings for Quyon surrendering only two hits. Lahey went five and two thirds taking the loss. Lyle Schell came in to stop the bleeding in the sixth.

The game remained 0-0 until the fourth inning. In the top half, Luke 'Ham' Young reached first with a full-swing bunt and swiped second on a pass ball. After Lahey retired the next batter, Greer helped out his cause stroking a two-out single up the middle to give Quyon the lead.

In the bottom half of the inning Cooney struggled to find the mitt giving up a walk and then a full-count infield single to put runners on first and second. Schell laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance both runners into scoring position. With the infield pulled in and only one out, Greer got Donny Cox to hit a ground ball to first base. The runner on third was caught in no-man's land and on the attempt to return to the base the first baseman threw him out. After making the tag, third baseman Steve McCord turned around and immediately caught the runner from second base trying to advance, completing the unconventional 3 - 5 double-play.

In the top of the sixth Quyon exploded for seven runs, putting the game out of reach. Ham led off and grounded to the shortstop. The ball seemed to handcuff him and the extra second enabled Young to beat out the throw. Jordan Kearns was up next and in an attempt to lay down the sac-bunt, a questionnable non-call on what appeared to be a foul ball, followed by an error to the first baseman allowed him to reach safely. Greer reached base on another bunt and with the bases loaded Dennis McCleary hit a rope to right field scoring two. Quyon went on to bat through the line-up and add five more that inning.

Quyon's next task is Tuesday night versus the Orleans Gators in Quyon.
