WC Electric shuts out Quyon 1-0
Brad Porter celebrated his 33rd birthday in fine fashion on Tuesday night, throwing a 2-hit shutout 1-0 win for West Carleton Electric over the Quyon Flyers in GOFL action in Fitzroy Harbour. Drew Hathway went the distance taking the loss for the Flyers allowing only four hits.
Neil Murphy's line drive homer in the second with two out proved to be the difference in this pitchers' duel. Murphy hit his line drive homer in the second just to the south of the "Grey Monster" in right to score the game's only run.
Quyon threatened in the third when Ben Younge doubled and Matt Greer singled putting runners on the corners with two out. However, Porter induced a ground ball to end the threat.
In the bottom of the third, Fitzroy had a small rally when Joe Sawyer, a pick up from the Fitzroy town league in his first GOFL at bat, drew a walk. After Jon Daley hit into a fielder's choice, Trevor Barton hit an infield single. Hathway got out of the innning getting the next batter to pop up.
WC Electric had a chance to get Porter some insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. Barton led off with a single. Steve Johnson dropped a sacrifice bunt and the Flyers opted to attempt to try for the play at second but failed. When a wild pitch moved the runners to second and third, Quyon intentionally walked WC Electric's Michael Cavanagh loading the bases with none out. Hathway again worked out of the jam, with a strike out, a ground ball resulting in an out at home, and another strike out, to keep the game within one.
Porter managed to keep Quyon off the board in the bottom of the seventh to preserve the 1-0 win for West Carleton Electric.
