Quyon wins 12 inning game to advance to GOFL semifinals

It was a fastball classic as the Quyon Flyers needed 12 innings to defeat the Manotick Printers in GOFL quarter-final action on Wednesday night in Manotick. Quyon wins the series 2-0 and advances to the semi-finals.

Drew Hathway took the win, throwing 6 innings in relief of Matt Greer. Jason Smith had the loss, throwing all 12 innings.

With the "international rule" in effect, putting a runner on second during the extra innings, there were plenty of opportunities for both teams to score after the regulation seven innings resulted in a 2-2 tie.

It looked like Quyon had the game won in the eleventh. Greer hit a flare to left centre in the top of the inning to cash an RBI and put Quyon up 4-3. Then in the bottom, with a runner on third and two out, Hathway struck out the batter with a pitch that bounced in the dirt. However, the throw to first was misplayed, allowing the run to score and put the game into the twelfth frame and eliciting a collective groan from the Easton and Blitz players waiting to start their playoff series.

Shawn Laframboise's single just off the glove of the Manotick second baseman in the top of the twelfth held up as the winner, as Hathway shut things down in the bottom of the inning, finalizing the 5-4 win and ending Manotick's season.

Quyon will await the completion of the Blitz / Easton series to determine their opponent. If the defending champs win the series, Quyon will face Stittsville and Easton will face Carp. If the Blitz pull off the upset, Quyon would face Carp and the Blitz would play Stittsville.

Game 1 of the Blitz / Easton series followed this 12 inning marathon, starting at 10:30. The score was 2-0 for Easton after three complete when this reporter left. Game 2 of the series is scheduled for Thursday night (tonight) in Stittsville at 7:30pm.
