Quyon defeats Greely 10-1 - now with story

from Mo Laframboise
Flyers down Eagles 10 - 1 on Opening Night

Andy Shields park was the scene of GOFL opening night this year with the Quyon COMBAT Flyers coming out with a solid start to their '09 campaign. Quyon handed the ball to Matt Greer, who pitched all five innings, gave up no earned runs, and took the win. Greely countered with Shannon Borho (L), and Ryan Cox and Gord Flannery each saw some time in relief.

The Flyers got the ball rolling in the top half of the first. Shawn Laframboise started things off with a one-out full-swing bunt, reaching first base on the infield single. After a single from Joe "XXL" McCleary, Borho plugged Steve McCord in the arm to load the bases. After retiring Nick Armitage on strikes, Borho gave Greer the free pass with two outs, walking in the first run of the game.

Things stayed quiet until the third, where Quyon tacked on a couple more runs in their half of the inning. Joe McCleary led things off with a walk and was sacrificed to second on a bunt from McCord. Borho retired the next batter to bring Greer to the plate with two outs. McCleary advanced to third on a wild pitch, and Greer walked for the second time of the night. With runners on the corners, Greer was given the green light. The ensuing wild pitch scored McCleary and put Greer on second. Kenny 'Big Papi' Fleck then stroked an RBI single to right field to give Quyon a 3 - 0 lead.

Ryan Cox came in to relieve Borho at the start of the fourth inning. Dennis McCleary led off with a triple and Laframboise reached on an error charged to the third baseman. Both would score on a double to centrefield off the bat of XXL. Big Joe would later score on a hit from Armitage.

Greely would get on the scoresheet in the bottom half of the first. Borho led off, reaching first on an error to the shortstop, and advanced to second on a single from Anil Hayne. Borho then scored from second on a RBI single from Tyler Cox. Quyon added another four runs in the fifth, with help from a Greer home run, to take the game by a score of 10 - 1.
