Carp defeats Blitz 4-3
from Eric Rosenquist
The Carp I4C Victory were in Manotick on Wednesday night to take on the Ottawa Blitz in the first game of a home & home series. The Blitz travel to Carp on Thursday for an 8:30PM game against the Victory.
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the 4th when the home side put up two runs thanks to good execution coupled with some well placed hits off Carp ace Dan Konkle. Stephane Vinette got things going for the Blitz with a leadoff walk and was then moved to 2nd base when Jamie Blakely's bunt fell perfectly in place between 3 Carp defenders for an infield hit. Tony Searle then cashed in Vinette with an RBI single that landed just beyond Carp SS Kevin McGuire's reach in shallow LF. Two batters later, Marcel Mondoux - in to pinch run for Blakely - scored on a Will Mood ground ball and a close play at home plate. Konkle then retired the next two Blitz batters to end the inning.
Carp got their offence going in the top of the 5th when Shawn Simzer took a 1-out walk and then moved to 2B on a wild pitch. With two out, Dan Konkle hit a deep homerun ball that ended up foul by a few feet, but then followed that up with an RBI single to RF to score Simzer and cut the deficit to one run. Tony MacDonald and pinch hitter Todd Storms then reached on an error and a walk, loading the bases for Carp. Blakely got out of the jam however and was able to get Aaron Amo to ground out to keep the Blitz in the lead.
In their half of the 5th, the Blitz increased their lead to 3-1 when Darron Barr drew a leadoff walk and was moved to second by another Blitz seeing-eye bunt that gave Ottawa runners at 1st and 2nd with nobody out. With one out and the runners on 2nd and 3rd, Jamie Blakely brought Barr home on a ground ball fielder's choice. With Barr heading home on contact, the throw to the plate from the Carp second baseman to the plate was low and everyone was safe. Carp atoned for the miscue on the next play however by getting Bergeron out at the plate after an attempted 1st & 3rd double-steal that SS Kevin McGuire played perfectly. Konkle was then able to strike out Derick Bulley to end the inning.
Carp answered back in the top of the 6th, getting two runs off Ottawa relief pitcher Derick Bulley thanks to three singles and a Blitz error. With Tim Power on second after a single and stolen base, Shawn Simzer hit a ball up the middle that eluded the Blitz SS and scored Power. Simzer was moved to second by a Brooks Paziuk single and tied the game when Dan Konkle hit a single, giving Konkle two RBIs on the night.
Carp went ahead in the top of the 7th thanks to a two-out solo home run off the bat of Kevin McGuire. Konkle closed the door in the bottom of the seventh to preserve the win, allowing a two-out walk to Stephane Vinette but following that with a strikeout to end the game.
