Stitsville 7 Carp 7 - details
from Eric Rosenquist
For the second time in a one week span, Carp and Stittsville played to a tie game. This game saw Darren Featherstone on the mound for the 56ers and Trevor Wood pitching for the Victory team. Both pitched the entire game, giving up two home runs each.
Stittsville got off to a quick start with 4 runs in the top of the first inning thanks to back-to-back jacks by Ryan Bond and Dan Bradley. Carp answered back and tied the game in the bottom half when Kevin McGuire hit a 3-run home run and then Tony MacDonald singled to bring in Tim Power.
Both teams had skeletal crews - 9 players each with many regular players away, forcing some players to play out of position.
With Carp's other starting pitchers unavailable for the game, Trevor Wood was forced into action despite having ruptured a large blister on his pitching hand earlier in the week. Several bandages were required in order to cover the raw skin and prevent the wound from bleeding. Despite the injury, Wood was able to mix his speeds and locations well enough to work out of several jams and prevent the Stittsville hitters from taking control of the game.
Darren Featherstone made his first start of the year for the 56ers, throwing to Tyler Nystedt since team captain and catcher Sam Oliver was away on vacation.
The game stayed tied at 4 until the 5th inning when Stittsville pushed across a run on a sacrifice fly. Stittsville then went up 7-4 in the top of the 6th, but Carp cut the deficit by a run to make it 7-5 when Shawn Simzer hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the 6th.
After holding Stittsville off the score sheet in the top of the 7th, Carp came to bat in the bottom of the 7th needing two runs. Featherstone quickly retired the first two batters, but then walked Carp call-up Dan Rollin and gave up an infield single to Kevin McGuire. Carp LF Tim Power then hit a sky-high fly ball into the swirling winds in shallow RF. Three Stittsville players converged on the ball, which eventually came down and bounced off the heel of the Stittsville second baseman's glove. With two out, the runners were moving on contact, and the height of the fly ball allowed plenty of time for both to score on the play, tying the game at 7. Featherstone then induced a groundout off the bat of Carp CF Shawn Simzer to end the game and preserve the tie.
