Carp wins 12-2 over Blitz - UPDATED

from Eric Rosenquist

Carp I4C Victory catcher Tim Power told his infielders to be ready for action during the mound conference before the first pitch of Thursday night's game against the Ottawa Blitz. Pitcher Neil Cooke's riseball was coming in flat during warmup and Power feared that the Blitz hitters would be all over it.

As it turned out, he was right - 4 of the first 6 Blitz batters hit the ball hard to stake the visitors to an early 2-0 lead. Luckily for Carp, Cooke worked through his problems and settled into a groove for the rest of the game, striking out 6 and scattering 5 hits over the next four innings in the mercy-shortened game.

Derek Bergeron got things going for the Blitz when he sent Cooke's first pitch down the left field line for a leadoff triple. Jamie Blakely then promptly singled to bring home Bergeron. Blitz cleanup hitter Tony Searle gave the Blitz runners on 2nd and 3rd with only one out when he singled to center and advanced to 2nd on a throw to 3b that wasn't in time to get Blakely. Blitz first baseman Will Mood then drew a walk to load the bases, enabling Andrew Bruce to drive in the second Blitz run on a fielder's choice ground ball to second. After a short mound conference, Cooke settled down and retired the next two Blitz batters to end the threat.

Cooke pitched well the rest of the way, facing only 17 Blitz batters over the next 4 innings, thanks in part to some solid defensive plays such as Shawn Simzer's catch in deep left center that took a sure double away from Blitz leadoff hitter Derek Bergeron in the top of the 4th.

Carp responded quickly to the Blitz scoring, getting three runs off Blitz starter Derick Bulley in their half of the first inning. Kurtis Summers continued to show a good eye at the plate, drawing a lead-off walk - his first of two on the night, giving him 5 walks in only 10 plate appearances. Carp rookie Aaron Amo, playing DP for the night, then hit a single to give Carp two base runners with none out. Cleanup hitter Tim Power scored Summers with an RBI single then promptly stole second, setting the table for first baseman Tony MacDonald to hit his first double of the year and plate both runners.

The Carp hitters managed to break the game open in the second inning, taking 4 walks and scoring 7 runs on a sacrifice fly by Kevin McGuire, a three-run home run by Al Read, and a couple of miscues by the Blitz defence. With the score 10-2 after 1⅔ innings, Will Mood came in to pitch and got the Blitz out of the inning.

Mood pitched a scoreless 3rd inning, facing only four Carp hitters, then gave up two additional runs in the 4th when Tony MacDonald and Al Read scored on a sac fly by Eric Colvin and a single by Shawn Simzer.
