"The Glen" Season Preview for 2009

The Glen Cairn Men's Fastball League enters its 38th season with more players and teams than last season, and with several new sponsors on board. After dropping to eight teams in the 2008 season, the league is up to nine teams thanks to many new players who've decided to give the sport or the league a try.

All games are played at the A.Y. Jackson Secondary School diamond on Abbeyhill Rd in Kanata; Monday and Tuesday are the primary game nights with a few games slated for Wednesday nights. The league also runs a tournament in mid June. This year the tournament is scheduled for the weekend of June 12th-14th and will be held at the Carp Fairground diamonds. The twin diamonds at Bridlewood's Deevy Pines Park (aka Core Park) had been home to the league tournament for the past several seasons, but due to a double-booking error by the city, the league was forced to look elsewhere. Carp was chosen since it had two good quality diamonds that were available for the June 12th-14th weekend.

With a nine-team league, there's been some talk of inviting outside recreational teams to participate in the league tournament to get the total up to a more scheduling-friendly 10 or 12 teams, but so far no firm decision has been made.

The regular season kicked off on May 4th and runs through late August. Playoffs start as soon as the regular season games have been completed and usually wrap up in mid-to-late September.
