Stittsville and Carp tie 1-1
The defending champion Stittsville 56ers began their season by hosting Carp I4C Victory on a spring evening tailor-made for fastball.
Dan Bradley and Neil Cooke were given the ball as the starting pitchers, and neither showed any signs of rust from the winter layoff, striking out 11 and 7 batters respectively while going the distance for their clubs.
Stittsville struck early to go ahead 1-0 in the first inning. After Cooke retired leadoff hitter Scott Herriot on a ground out to short, 3B John Craig singled to centerfield. Cooke then struck out Dan Jessiman, but with two out, RF Darren Featherstone stroked a double to left-centre that scored Craig. Cooke then sent C Sam Oliver down on strikes to end the threat.
Dan Bradley kept the Carp hitters at bay until the top of the 5th inning. With two out, Tony MacDonald pinch hit for Shawn Simzer and worked the count to 3-0, then drove a 3-1 offering from Bradley up the middle for Carp's second hit of the night. Simzer re-entered to run for MacDonald and was able to advance to third on a couple of wild pitches. Kurtis Summers then drew his second walk of the game, giving Carp runners on the corners with two out.
With leadoff hitter Eric Colvin at the plate, Summers took off for second and drew a throw from Stittsville catcher Sam Oliver. Summers was then able to stay alive in a run-down long enough for Simzer to break for home plate, drawing a throw from Stittsville 2B Darren McCartney. The throw from McCartney to the plate was a bit low, allowing Simzer to score and prompting Summers to try to advance to third. Unfortunately for Summers, this time he got caught in the run-down and was tagged out at third, ending the inning for Carp and capping the scoring for the night.
Stittsville threatened to break the tie in the bottom of the 7th when Tyler Nystedt, who entered the game for Scott Jessiman in the 5th, started the inning with a flare to RF for a single. Adam Maheu then surprised Carp by swinging away on the first pitch and lining a single up the middle, putting Nystedt at second with no outs. Dan Bradley came to the plate and was given the green light to swing away; fortunately for Carp he grounded into a double play when Kevin McGuire scooped up Bradley's ground ball, stepped on second, and threw to Todd Storm at 1B. Cooke was then able to get Darren McCartney to ground out to end the game and preserve the tie.
