Carp defeats Orleans 4-1 - now with story
from Eric Rosenquist
Carp travelled to Orleans to play the Gators on a cool damp night under a full moon. Either the moon or the damp infield must have affected the hitters, because Carp pitcher Dan Konkle and Orleans ace Chad Hargrove racked up K after K during the 7 inning game.
Carp got off to a quick start, with leadoff hitter Eric Colvin walking, stealing second, and then moving to 3B on a wild pitch. Carp rookie Aaron Amo then followed up with a walk of his own, and with Carp SS Kevin McGuire at the plate, Amo took 2B uncontested. With two runners in scoring position, McGuire hit a fly ball to centre field that easily scored Colvin and allowed Amo to move to 3B. Amo then scored on a wild pitch as Hargrove struggled with control in the early going.
Orleans answered back in the bottom of the first when leadoff hitter Joel Langford hit a solo home run to make the score 2-1. That was all that Orleans would get off Carp pitcher Dan Konkle however, as he settled into a groove with catcher Al Read and retired 18 of the next 25 Orleans batters via strikeout. When the Orleans hitters put the ball in play, the Carp fielders were there to make the play, allowing only two hits after the leadoff homerun. In the 1st inning, Brooks Paziuk knocked down a hard grounder and was just able to get Orleans speedster Kristian Knapp at 1B. In the fifth inning, Carp LF Shawn Simzer chased down a fly ball that looked destined for extra bases and made a great catch in the left centre alley.
Carp added single runs in the 4th and 7th innings, with Aaron Amo having a great night at the plate going 2 for 3 with a walk and a pair of doubles, and Eric Colvin having a great eye at the plate and drawing a pair of walks.
For Orleans, Jeff Barber and Eric Lafleur each had singles off Konkle but were stranded on the bases.
