Easton defeats the Blitz 5-4
by Cory Morrison and Andrew Bruce
With numerous new faces in their lineup Easton kicked off the 09 GOFL campaign with a hard fought 5-4 victory over the Ottawa Blitz.
Easton opened the scoring in their half of the 1st as Kyle Gourgon led off with a single then Chad Milne walked. A wild pitch allowed both runners to get into scoring position. Cory Morrison then hit a chopper back over the mound that was misplayed by the Blitz shortstop allowing Gourgon to score and Morrison to be safe at first. Blitz Starter Derek Bulley was able to escape further damage by getting the next 3 batters in order two of which were by strike out.
The Blitz answered back in their half of the 1st. Russ Mitchel led off with a walk, followed by an 0-2 double from Derek "the bearded lady" Bergeron. Derick Bulley cashed Mitchel by hitting into a fielders choice, followed by a standup triple from Will Mood to score Bergeron and give the Blitz a 2-1 lead.
Easton regained the lead in the 2nd as Scott Marion led off with a single followed by a Pat O'connor triple to the right field gap. After retiring newly accquired Martin Ballard, Kyle Gourgon hit a sac fly to left field which plated O'Connor from 3rd.
The home side Blitz knotted the score at 3 in the bottom of the 2nd after Stephane Vinette reached base on a fielder's choice, was advanced on sac bunt and later scored on a sac fly by Russ Mitchel.
The seasaw affair continued in the 3rd as Cory Morrison led off the inning with a triple to straight away center then scored on a wild pitch to Dave Tubman to put the visitors up 4-3.
The Blitz made a pitching change in the 4th as Jamie Blakely replaced Derek Bulley. Easton added to their lead in the 5th as Chad Milne walked then stole second base. Dave Tubman then singled to score Milne and put the score at 5-3.
The Blitz cut the lead to one in the 6th. They loaded the bases with a single by Bulley, walk to Mood and Tony Searle reaching on error. Vinette then drew a bases loaded walk to score Bulley.
