Brockville wins North Leeds league title

from Ron Smith, Brockville Recorder-Times

Brockville has won its first men's fastball title in a number of years.

Brockville outscored Newboro 8-7 in the fifth and deciding game of the North Leeds Men's Fastball League playoff championships at Goldie Christopher Park before more than 60 fans on Thursday night.

This year's Brockville team was transplanted from Lyn early in the season. For the three previous years, Lyn and Newboro have met in the finals with Newboro winning twice and Lyn winning the other time before this season.

On Thursday night, Brockville's Matt McNish broke a 7-7 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning with a two-out, solo home run to deep centerfield off losing pitcher Troy McLean. McNish hit a two-run homer earlier in the game.

Newboro jumped off to a 2-0 lead in the second inning with Brockville scoring five times in the third inning to claim a 5-2 lead. Newboro scored three times in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game at 7-7.

McNish pitched the win with Jeff McNish coming on in the seventh inning to earn the save. McLean, who pitched the last four games of the finals, took the loss.

In the regular season, Greenbush had finished in first place, followed by Smiths Falls, Brockville and Newboro. In the first round of playoffs, Newboro upset Greenbush in two straight games while Brockville knocked off Smiths Falls in two games.

In the finals, Brockville won the first two games of the series by scores of 4-3 and 2-1 before Newboro rallied for 14-8 and 6-0 victories.

Superstitious after losing a number of games in the regular season and not wanting to jeopardize their chances in the playoffs, the Brockville team imposed a media blackout about not publicizing its results until the post-season ended.

Other members of the winning Brockville team were: Jon Cross, Adam Cross, Jason Livingstone, Milo VanDyk, John Purvis, Mike Hanna, Matt Walker, Adam McNish, Mark Reilly, Derrick Roberts and Ryan Brown.

The Brockville team operated without a sponsor this season but is already looking for sponsorship for next season.
