Gil Read Memorial Tournament a success
Just recovering now after a "full pull" at the Gil Read this weekend. Lots of ball, beer and burgers at the Carp Fairgrounds.
Congratulations are in order to Al and Chris Read who put on an excellent event. The weather was a bit sketchy on Friday night, but otherwise it was a beautiful weekend to be at the ball diamond.
Very good idea by the organizers to move the tournament to Carp - and not just because it's a lot easier for me to get a ride home afterward. An excellent venue and a substantial savings for the Foundation.
There seemed to be a good crew of volunteers, working hard on the diamonds, the BBQ, announcing, scorekeeping, admission gate and of course tending bar. Nice to see so many people out to help a good cause - I know from personal experience these are the folks that make a tourney a success.
Crowds on Friday were a bit low, due most likely to the misty weather. However on Saturday and Sunday there were lots of folks there taking in some good ball. Good to see lots of "oldtimers" out there watching games as well as young families. Several lcoal "Carpies" came out to watch the games and I know many of them were impressed by the caliber of the ball on display.
Ten teams and a four game guarantee was nice. Definitely some quality ball with good pitching and talented squads. Also good to see the Trend-Arlington lads put something together during the last week to ensure they had a tenth team.
Quyon was definitely the top team in the tourney and deserved to win it. I know many locals were impressed by the young team's level of play and several people came over and asked me "How old is that Joran Graham?"
I thought the officiating was at a high level, good work by George Findley and his crew (no I'm not sucking up ha ha). Nice to see them working the "3 official system" on Sunday games.
Given the sizeable payout, quality location, and caliber of play let's hope the organizers go back to Carp and hopefully attract a few other out of town teams to the fourth annual event in 2011.
