GOFL results from Quyon on Thursday

In GOFL action on Thursday night in Quyon the Combat Flyers came away with three points in a double header against Fitzroy Harbour West Carleton Electric.

In the opening game, the Flyers staked out a 7-1 lead, but the Electric came back to tie things at 7-7. Andy Barber went the distance for Fitzroy while Matt Greer and Joran Graham split pitching duties for the Quyon.

Quyon set the tone early, with their first three batters of the game scoring. Michael Baker singled to lead off and Matt Greer reached on a misplayed fly ball. Nick Armitage walked to load the bases. Then Joran Graham's single scored two runs. A Steve McCord ground out later in the inning scored a third run to put the home team up 3-zip after the first.

WC Electric got on the board in the top of the second. Jeff Cavanagh doubled to lead things off, and later scored on Jon Daley's RBI single with two out.

A montrous solo homer by Joran Graham in the third put Quyon up 4-1 and a three run fourth created a large 7-1 lead. In the fourth, Steve McCord led off with a single. After a ground out moving McCord to third, he scored on a wild pitch. Curtis Daley walked and stole second. Troy Cote's RBI single scored Daley. Baker then got on by a fielder's choice which put Cote out at second, and Baker took second on an error. An RBI single by Matt Greer scored Baker. A single by Nick Armitage and walk to Joran Graham loaded the bases, but Barber got out of a bases loaded jam with a fly out to centre.

Fitzroy began to chip away at the lead in the fifth. Derek Barber lead off with a walk and advanced on Jeff Barber's single. After a strikeout, Troy Wilson singled to drive in a Barber. Following a ground out, Beef Johnson hit an infield single to drive in a run, and subsequent run scored when the ball was bobbled to make it 7-4.

WC Electric tied things at 7-7 in the sixth. After a fly out, Andy Barber singled, Derek Barber walked and Jeff Barber also singled to load the bases. Neil Murphy's bloop single drove in a run, chasing Greer as Quyon manager Kenny Fleck brought in Graham to relieve. Troy Wilson subsequently hit an infield single to make the score 7-6. A bases loaded walk to Jeff Cavanagh tied the game at 7-7, the final score.

Quyon had a good chance to win the game in the bottom of the seventh. Nick Armitage singled, but was caught stealing. Joran Graham was walked, as was Joe McCleary. A fielder's choice hit by McCord put Graham out at third and resulted in runners in first and second with two out. A further walk, this time to Luke Young, loaded the bases. However, Andy Barber beared down to get a full count, two out strikeout to make the final 7-7.

Quyon Combat Flyers 5 West Carleton Electric 3

In the second half of the doubleheader, the Flyers won 5-3 in another tight game over WC Electric. Joran Graham went the distance for the win for Quyon as did Jeff Barber in taking the loss for Fitzroy.

WC threaten in the top of the second but came away empty. Neil Murphy walked, Mitch Taylor singled, and Adam Brown reached on an error, loading the bases with two out. A sharply hit liner to centre by Jon Daley looked like it would score some runs, but a nice catch by Steve McCord ended the inning cleanly for Quyon.

Quyon again staked out an early lead, scoring three in the bottom of the second. Mike Baker walked and stole second with one out. After a ground out, Luke Young and Matt Greer both walked to load the bases. A gapper to left-centre field cleared the bases and earned three RBIs for Shawn Laframboise and put the Combat Flyers up 3-0.

Derek Barber got Fitzroy on the board in the top of the third with a line drive home run to left to make the score 3-1 for Quyon.

The Flyers responded with another run in the third. Graham walked to start the inning. Joe McCleary launched a long fly ball that just missed going out and stayed in for a double to put men on second and third. Steve McCord's sac fly to centre scored Graham to make it 4-1 Quyon.

Quyon added an insurance run in the fourth. Matt Greer did it all himself, walking with one out, stealing second and taking third and home on wild pitches.

A rally in the fifth by the Electric scored two. Jon Daley was hit by a pitch, Derek Barber walked. Troy Wilson's RBI single scored Daley. Jeff Barber then walked to load the bases. After a strikeout, Jeff Cavanagh hit an RBI single. The bases were loaded with one out, but the next two batters hit shallow fly balls to centre and the inning ended. With no further scoring the game ended 5-3.
