Micksburg wins both in doubleheader against West Carleton Electric

A good-sized crowd of Upper Valley fastball fans were treated to two great games of fastpitch softball on Friday night in Micksburg, as the Twins hosted West Carleton Electric in a GOFL doubleheader.

The early game of the night was a showcase of two excellent pitchers: Corey Costello, the dominant pitcher in eastern Ontario in the last decade against Andy Barber, a twenty-year old recently named member of Team Ontario.

Costello was almost untouchable in earning the Caveman's Choice honours as player of the game. He had a no-hitter, with one hit batsmen, 20 strikeouts and one ground ball out, which he fielded. Barber, while not quite as dominant, also had a great showing, allowing only five hits, walking one, and striking out 13.

The Twins scored the only runs of the game in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, Corey Costello had a classic battle with Barber, fighting off several pitches and working a full count before stroking an outside pitch up the middle for a single. Riley Hennessy came in to pinch run, and moved to third when Joran Graham doubled to left. After a strikeout, catcher Chad Costello hit a double off hand down the first base line to score both runners.

The Twins won the nightcap in dramatic fashion, as Joran Graham throwing for Micksburg faced off against Steve Cavanagh for Fitzroy.

Micksburg scored one in the first. Riley Hennessy reached on an error. Jamey Mick walked to put two men on. Corey Costello's RBI single drove in Hennessy to make it 1-0.

The Twins got another in the third. Corey Costello singled and Graham singled, and both advanced on wild pitches. After a strikeout, Mark Bell's sac fly to right scored Corey to make it 2-0.

Graham hit a solo shot from mid-shin in the fifth to push the lead to 3-0 for the home team.

The Electric battled back with two runs in the top of six. Derek Barber reached on an error and then after a strike out, Neil Murphy walked. There was a subsequent strikeout, but Dave Bahm's single drove in both runners to cut the lead to 3-2.

Fitzroy tied the game in the top of the seventh. Andy Barber lead off with a single and took second on a wild pitch. A ground out advanced Andy to third. Derek Barber walked and then took second base without a throw. Shawn Rebertz hit a blooper to left to score Andy and tie the game. Graham struck out the next two batters to keep the game at 3-3.

The Twins won the game in dramatic fashion in the bottom of the seventh, much to the delight of the local fans on hand. Cavanagh got a pop up and ground out to get two outs, bringing up Graham. Graham's second solo homer of the night was a walk off shot to earn him the Caveman's Choice as player of the game and win the match 4-3 for the Twins.
