Kanata Pirates over West Carleton Electric 7-5 UPDATED

In Greater Ottawa Fastball League play in Carp on Thursday night, the Kanata Pirates beat West Carleton Electric 7-5.

Jason Smith had the complete game win throwing for Kanata. Andy Barber took the loss for Fitzroy and had relief from his brother Jeff.

The Pirates got out to an early 6-0 lead after two innings and held on for the win.

In the first, Marcel Mondoux doubled and moved to third when the throw in was off line. Jon Ferguson then walked to put runners on the corners. A delayed steal scored Mondoux. Later in the inning, Derick Bulley singled and so did Tony MacDonald, who drove in Ferguson to make 2-0 Pirates.

Fitzroy had the bases loaded in the top of two with none out. Jeff Cavanagh singled, as did Derek Barber. A bunt single by Jon Daley put three men on. However Smitty got out of the inning with a pop up to second, a strike out and a fly out to centre.

Kanata put up four in the second inning. Kevin Williams walked to start things, and moved to second on Kevin Shonfield's bunt single. Mondoux's sac bunt moved the runners over a base, and Ferguson's singled cashed both runs. Trevor Power then launched a high fly ball to centre that was not caught, putting the Newf on second and Ferg on third. Bulley's subsequent single scored both of them to make it 6-0.

West Carleton finally got on the board in the third. Michael Cavanagh singled with one out, moved to second on a ground out and scored on Jeff Cavanagh's single.

In the bottom of the third, WC made a pitching change, bringing in Jeff Barber to replace Andy, who then threw three straight clean innings.

The Electric chipped away at the lead. In the fifth, Trevor Barton lead off with a walk, and Michael Cavanagh walked as well after a line out. A wild pitch moved men to second and third. Smith got a strike out to get two outs, but Jeff Cavanagh came through again, with another RBI single, this one scoring two to narrow the gap to 6-3.

Another run was manufactured in the sixth. Jon Daley singled to start the inning, was moved to second on Neil Murphy's sac bunt, took third on a wild pitch and scored on Dave Bahm's ground out to narrow the gap to two runs.

Kanata scored their only run against Jeff Barber in the bottom of the sixth. Bulley singled with one out and scored on MacDonald's line drive off hand double to right.

West Carleton managed a run in the seventh on Shawn Rebertz's solo home run, but the game ended 7-5 for the Pirates.

Derick Bulley gets the Caveman's Choice award as player of the game. He was three for four at the plate, driving in two and scoring a run.
