Quyon edges by West Carleton 1-0

In what observers were calling a "well played game of fastpitch softball" that took just over 70 minutes, the Quyon Flyers won a close one over West Carleton Electric by a score of 1-0 on Thursday night in Greater Ottawa Fastball League play.

Both pitchers had great nights on the slab, with Matt Greer getting the win and Andy Barber throwing very well in a losing effort.

Quyon threatened in the bottom of the first. Dennis McCeleary lead off with a single, took second on a passed ball, and moved to third on wild pitch. After a strike out, Matt Greer walked and stole second. Barber got a ground out, and second baseman Trevor Barton stole a hit getting to a sharply hit line drive to end the inning.

The Flyers had another threat in the second. After back to back strikeouts, both Jordan Kearns and Curtis Daley walked. A sharply hit ball up the middle was once again cleanly field by Barton who stepped on second base to end the inning and save runs.

The top of the fourth saw the Electric get a good chance to get on the board. Barber's hard hit ball was misplayed and he reached frist. After the sac bunt attempt was popped up, Michael Cavanagh singled. However good defense by Quyon by Nick Armitage at second and Steve McCord at third on consecutive ground balls stopped the rally.

The home team also had a good chance in the fourth. McCord walked with one out, and a bunt by Shawn Laframboise was misplayed to put two on. Barber got a strikeout, followed by a grounder to third on which Steve Edgerton made a huge stretch to get out at first base.

The fifth saw West Carleton get Edgerton on with a lead off walk, move him to second on a Chris Costello sac bunt. However, Greer got a strike out for the second out, and flare by Joey Sawyer that looked like it might drop in shallow right was caught by Armitage.

The Flyers scored the game's only run in the fifth. With one out, Dave Hobbs doubled down the left field line and score on Matt Greer's double.

With their last chance at bat, the Trics rallied in the seventh. The first out of the inning was a sharply hit grounder that was well fielded by Hobbs at short to get the put out at first. Steve Cavanagh then singled, follow by a single from Edgerton. Greer got the next batter to K, and the game was ended when Hobbs made another excellent play at short on a grounder to finish things at 1-0 for Q-town.
