West Carleton wins on Barber walk off single

West Carleton Electric won in dramatic fashion on Monday night in Greater Ottawa Fastball League play in Fitzroy Harbour, eliminating the Ottawa Valley As from the Final Four playdowns with a 4-3 win. There was a good crowd on hand of about 80 or so spectators (about half supporting each team) to watch a well played game of fastpitch softball on a beautiful late summer night.

Andy Barber had the win for the 'Trics, while Ben Broek took the loss, pitching well for Valley.

The home team put two across for an early lead in the bottom of the first. Andy Barber walked and moved to second on Trevor Barton's sacrifice bunt. Chris Costello then singled to score A.B. and advanced to second on a throw to the plate. After a strikeout, Costello was replaced by Jeff Barber via the two-out catcher rule, and J.B. was brought home on a double by Shawn Rebertz.

Valley threatened in the top of two. After a fly out, Sean Lecuyer walked and moved to second on Clayton Vance's single. A pop up got a second out, and then a runner interference call ended the inning, preserving the 2-0 lead for Fitzroy.

Both teams went three up three down in the third and fourth innings, as both chuckers were pitching well.

The As put up a big inning in the top of the fifth. Vance stayed hot at the plate, starting the inning with a single. After a fly out, Vance stole second and Lindsay Medynski scored him with an RBI infield single. Medynski then stole second, and after a pop out, scored on Dave Sullivan's pinch hit smacked to left centre. Sullivan then made it home on a single by Broek to put the As up 3-2.

Fitzroy looked like they may have a chance to score when Neil Murphy singled to start the bottom of the fifth. He moved to second on a sac bunt by Jeff Cavanagh and took third on a wild pitch. However two consecutive ground outs kept Valley up by a run.

The top of the sixth saw the Valley As get a chance when Vance tripled with two out, but a strikeout ended the inning. The Electric went down in order in the bottom of the sixth.

After Valley couldn't generate much in the top of the seventh, the stage was set for the exciting bottom of the seventh. Mike Cavanagh led off with a single for West Carleton and took second and third on wild pitches. Kevin Shonfield's RBI single scored M. Cav to tie the game. Murphy then laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Shonfield to second. After a strikeout, Barber's single up the middle walked things off as Shonfield scored to end the game 4-3 for Fitzroy.

West Carleton will play next in the semi-final against the loser of the undefeated game between Kars and Quyon, to be played tomorrow (September 18) at 7:30 pm in west Quebec.
