Quyon wins two in Manotick - game report

by Shawn Laframboise

The Quyon Flyers of Shawville travelled South-East to Manotick for some interleague play Wednesday night, coming away with two victories to improve their record on the season to .500.

Game 1

In the first game, the Flyers took a 9-3 win over the Osgoode Chiefs on the back of 7 solid innings from Matt Greer. Cory Baldwin took the loss throwing the complete game for the Chiefs.

The Flyers scored 2 in the 2nd inning to take an early lead. Steve McCord walked to start the inning and advanced to second on a groundout. The next batter hit a shallow pop fly behind first that was caught by the second baseman. As he went to the ground, McCord was able to tag up and advance to third. A short popup from Trevor Lahey off the glove of the pitcher allowed McCord to score. Walks to Evan Atkinson and Todd Hearty loaded the bases and Lane McMurtry and he came through with an RBI single. Atkinson was thrown out at home to end the inning.

Quyon added to their lead in the 3rd, putting another four runs across. Shawn Laframboise and Greer both singled and McCord cashed in Laframboise with an RBI single. Back-to-back walks scored another run before a fielder's choice put McCord out at home. Two more runs came in on a wild pitch that bounced out of play before the Chiefs were able to get out of the inning.

The Chiefs scored one in the 4th to narrow the gap to 6-1. Hudson Collins tripled to left field and scored on a sac fly. After a 1-out walk, the Flyers got out of the inning with a 6-4-3 double-play.

Both teams added two runs in the 6th. In the top-half, Laframboise doubled and scored on McCord's two-out RBI double. A single off the bat of Curtis Daley scored McCord. In the bottom half, after a lead-off single on a hard-hit ball to right field, Greer was able to get the next two batters out. With two outs, a high fly ball to left field was dropped and scored a run. That batter then came in to score on an RBI single. The Flyers added one in the 7th to round out the scoring.

The Flyers got on the board first in the 2nd inning. A one-out line-drive double to centre field by Trevor Lahey was cashed on a two-out RBI single from Todd Hearty. Quyon scored singles in innings 2, 3, 5 and 6 to go out to a 4-0 lead. Daley, McCord, and Hearty (2) had the RBI as the Flyers combined 7 hits and 3 walks for offense.

The Brewers scored both of their runs in the bottom of 6. Ryan Clare hit a line drive single with one out and scored on Chris MacFarlane's towering no-doubter to deep left field. That was all the Brewers could muster and the game ended 4-2.
