Owen Sound Junior Selects U23 win Napanee Early Bird
The Owen Sound Selects U23 team won the Napanee AFW Early Bird tournament this past weekend.
The Selects won six straight games to take the title at the ten team event but did have some close games along the way.
In the round robin, Owen Sound beat Micksburg Twins (2-0), Port Perry U20 (20-1), Kingston Axemen (5-1), and the Quebec Pidgeons (7-6). The Selects had a tight semi-final with Ogsoode U23 edging them 3-2, then had a rematch against the Axemen in final, winning 10-6. The final game had Riley Manion earning the win, with Jordan MacDonald taking the loss.
The finalists from Kingston finished with four wins and two losses. Clayton Robinson threw a five-inning perfect game against the Quebec Juniors in a divisional game.
Osgoode U23 won three and lost one in divisional play, losing only to Napanee U20. They then were edged 3-2 in the semi-final to finish tied for third.
Napanee Express U20 went undefeated in divisional play, winning three and tying a game against the Hamilton Pirates. They lost a very close semi-final to the Axemen, falling 6-4 in nine innings.
Micksburg Twins, without ace Joran Graham for the weekend, won two and lost two in divisional play, beating Port Perry U20 and Quebec Juniors but losing to the two finalists. The Twins had three other GOFL pitchers for the weekend, bringing along Adam Rueckwald, Andy Barber and Gregg Garrity.
Other teams in the event were the Quebec Pidgeons and Dundalk.
