West Carleton Electric U17 finish fifth at Ontario Summer Games
The West Carleton Electric U17 boys team had a good showing and tied for fifth at the Ontario Summer Games in Mississauga this past weekend with a record of two wins and three losses. Boys softball was one of several sports involved in these multi-sport games, complete with Opening Ceremonies and an "Athlete's Village" aka the Fairfield Inn & Suites Toronto Airport.
WC lost both games on Friday: 11-4 against fourth place finisher Napanee Express and 8-1 against eventual champions of the event, the Wilmot Thunder. The team rebounded for two straight wins on Saturday: 13-10 over Hillsdale Haymakers and 10-3 over the Tavistock Athletics, before being eliminated that evening after an 8-1 loss to Drumbo PDP Lightning, the silver medalists. Other teams participating were the Chatsworth Longhorns and Springbrook Royals.
Gabe Brown and Blake Bramburger each had a pitching win. Catcher Conner Hopper hit a home run out against Hillsdale on a baseball field. Estimated distance of the dinger was 345 feet. (Seriously, it was unreal.) Hopper hit another one against Tavistock that one-bounced to the fence at straight-away centre on the same diamond, directly below the 360 sign.
The kids all played very well and had good success for a "small market" team; I would note that 8 of the players went to elementary school together, which I would think would not be that common at this level.
