U15 house league season wraps up

The West Carleton U15 house league season wrapped up with Championship Wednesday in Kinburn last night.

The league had 10 teams this season - three from Kinburn, two from Fitzroy Harbour, two from McNab/Braeside and one each from Carp, Dunrobin and Stittsville. 

A Champs were Kinburn 3.

B Champs were Kinburn 2.

Kinburn clinic June 21

Justine Styles and friends are hosting a girls' fastball clinic this Sunday, June 21, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. The clinic is open to players aged 10–15. Justine, Ashley, and Steph are local fastball legends and will provide a fantastic afternoon of skills and drills.

Space is limited. To register, please email softball@kinburn.ca with "girls clinic" in the subject line and include the player's name, team, and age. Host bios will be sent as confirmation once registration is received.

The event is free, though donations of non-perishable food items for the WC Food Access Centre are greatly appreciated. There will also be a women’s fastball game following the clinic; please see the attached poster for more details.

U17 Men's Canadian Championship in Napanee

The Softball Canada U17 Men's Canadian Championship will be held August 6 - 10 in Napanee.

There are 11 teams participating from Ontario, Quebec, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia and Saskatchewan.

Team Ontario day in Carp

Team Ontario, a U20 Men's team that will be participating at the Canada Games in St. John's, NL in August, visited Carp on Saturday at an event hosted by the West Carleton Fastball Committee.

Early in the day, a free skills clinic was organized by the Team ON players and coaches, and it was well attended by local youth from across the area.

Later in the afternoon, Team Ontario played a doubleheader exhibition game against a team of Greater Ottawa Fastball League players from five different clubs. 

The first game saw Team O win 3-1. Dakota McComb, Sean Demarest, and Jared Vosper pitched for the U20s while Andy Barber and Adam Rueckwald pitched for the GOFLers. Matthew Van de Wynckel, the Most Valuable Player at the U20 Men's Canadian Championship in Carp last year, hit a homer. Brad Pender hit one out for the GOFL club. 

The second game was a 6-3 win for the youngsters. Joe Weiler and Vosper pitched for Team O and Drew Hathway, Rueckwald and Barber were on the slab for the GOFL. Sam Diamond and the only local player on the team, Conner Hopper of Fitzroy Harbour, hit homers for Team Ontario.  Joran Graham had a two RBI double for the GOFL.

 

Team Czechia vs West Carleton Electric doubleheader

Team Czechia, a U16 boys team currently on a tour of Quebec and Ontario, made a stop in Fitzroy Harbour on Tuesday for a doubleheader against West Carleton Electric U20.

A good crowd about 120 was on hand to watch two games of fastpitch softball on a beautiful Canada Day in the Harbour. Pre-game, the national anthems of Czechia and Canada were played courtesy of YouTube and the teams exchanged pins.

The first game was a 13-7 win for West Carleton. Carter Wright had the win for the Electric with relief from Kaden Fowler. Alex Strathern was 2 for 4, Wright was 2 for 2, Bryce Rebertz was 3 for 3 with a walk. Ethan Howard had a double and a walk, as well as making several key plays at third base. Blake Bramburger, coming back from injury, did an excellent job playing first base. Jack Barton sealed the win with an amazing catch at the fence in left centre field for the final out of the game. 

After a snack of pizza together in the Community Centre, the teams played a second game with the Electric coming back from a 5-3 deficit after six for a 6-5 win. Finn Barton earned the win in relief of Gabe Brown. Colton Lecuyer had a clutch double in the seventh to drive in Hayden HK Khan who had singled to start things off. Dawson Pennock also had an important double in the final inning. Wright was 2 for 4 with the game tying RBI in the seventh, and Finn Barton was 2 for 3 with an inside the park homer and walk. 

Team Czechia showed some talent, playing well defensively and had disciplined hitting, striking out a total of only five times in two games. The Czechs had already played in St. Leonard, QC and will be moving on to play games in Napanee, Kingston, Tavistock, and Tara, ON as part of their tour as well as taking in a Blue Jays game.

The Ontario Amateur Softball Association has announced schedules for various boys' and men's levels. 

U15 - Eliminations in Napanee - July 4-6

There are 14 teams entered in this event which will determine which teams will go to the Canadian Championship in Winkler, Manitoba. Napanee is hosting and other teams from the eastern part of the province include Peterborough, Springbrook and Campbellford. Schedule: OASA U15 Elimination Napanee 2025.

U17 - Eliminations in Elmira - June 27-29

There are 7 teams entered at this tourney in Elmira, and the teams to play at the Canadian Championship in Napanee will be determined. Napanee and Amherstview from the eastern part of the province are entered. Schedule: OASA U17 Elimination Elmira 2025.pdf

U20 - Eliminations in Chepstow - July 4-6

There are 10 teams entered in this tournament to determine the representatives at the Canadian Championship in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Chatsworth are the host team. U23 - Eliminations in Wingham - June 27-29

There are 6 teams entered in this round robin event to determine the teams to be entered in the Canadian Championships in Kitchener. Masters - Provincials in Wingham - June 27-29

North Augusta diamond issue

This is a message that went out parents of minor softball players in North Augusta

We want to inform you of a situation currently unfolding regarding the main North Augusta ball diamond. In March, a light pole failed, prompting an inspection of the others. As of 5:30 PM Friday, the Township deemed some standards unsafe and ordered the immediate removal of all, impacting all minor ball games held under the lights.

This diamond is the heart of our community. While we fully support player safety, we cannot accept this decision without transparency regarding the testing or a timely plan—especially with no resolution expected until 2026. We strongly feel there is another solution that can keep players safe and allow us to continue on with our season.

We are encouraging everyone to reach out to council to let them know just how important ball is to our community. Below, you’ll find contact information for all council members involved, as well as a pre-written email from a community member you may use or personalize.

Let’s stand together to protect minor ball for all of the youth in our community.

For reference, below are the approximate numbers of ballplayers expected to play out of North Augusta this summer:

Coaches named for Team Canada U18, U23

Softball Canada has announced coaches for national teams at the U18 Men's and U23 Men's level.

The U18 Men's team will be led once again by Mark Quinn from P.E.I. who was the head coach for the previous cycle.

For U23 Men's, Bryan Brooks of Napanee has been named an assistant coach. Doug Allin of B.C. was previously named the head coach for this level. Brooks is also the head coach for Team Ontario men's softball, a U20 level team which will be participating at the Canada Summer Games in Newfoundland this August.

Lecuyer an All Star

Softball Canada names all stars for round robin play at Canadian Championships.

At the U17 Boys Canadian Championship last week in St Gervais, QC this past week, Fitzroy Harbour's Colton Lecuyer was named an all star infielder. Colton plays for the Napanee Express. In 9 games he batted .409, with 9 hits including two triples and a home run. He also batted in 15 runs and walked 7 times. He was perfect in the field with no errors.

Final day at U17 Canadians

There are four teams remaining at the Softball Canada U17 Boy's Canadian Championship in St-Gervais, QC.

Prince Albert, SK plays Chatsworth, ON at 10:30 a.m. with the winner to play Napanee, ON at 12:30 p.m.

Équipe Québec awaits the winner of the semi in the Final at 3 p.m. after defeating Napanee in a wild 18-11 match-up in the first vs seconds game.

Napanee and Québec undefeated at U17 Canadians

Both teams with local players - Napanee Express and Équipe Québec- are undefeated with 5-0 records at the Softball Canada U17 Boy's Canadian Championship in St. Gervais, QC.

With rain all day today, the schedule had to be modified as no games were played on Friday.

The two undefeated teams are scheduled to play on Saturday at 4 p.m.

U17 Boys' Canadians in St Gervais get started today

The Softball Canada U17 Boys' Canadian Championship starts today in St. Gervais, QC. with eight teams participating: Quebec, Newfoundland, four from Ontario and two from Saskatchewan. 

The host Equipe Quebec will have Cade Kuehl from Shawville catching for them - he plays for Quyon Flyers in the Greater Ottawa Fastball League and also the Shawville league and Harbour Ball in Fitzroy.

Amherstview (ON4) includes several players from eastern Ontario, many of who are with the Stittsville team in the Glen Cairn Men's Fastball League, including Daniel Read who also plays for Kars Aces in the GOFL.

Napanee (ON1) fresh off their win at the Ontario Summer Games will be a favourite at this event. Bryce Rebertz, Colton Lecuyer and Finn Barton are with the Express and they play with WC Rona U17 in the Fitzroy Harbour Men's Fastball League and have also played a bit in the GOFL.

Napanee wins U17 gold

The Napanee Express went undefeated to win the Ontario Amateur Softball Association Provincial A tournament on the weekend, as part of the Ontario Summer Games in London.

The Express beat Chatsworth 10-0 in the title game. They outscored their opponents 67-9 over the five games played.

Three players on the Express are members of WC Rona U17 which plays in the Fitzroy Harbour Men's Fastball League: Bryce Rebertz, Finn Barton and Colton Lecuyer.

Plumbers go undefeated in U13 select event

A team from West Carleton Minor Softball sponsored by Murphy's Plumbing won the four-team U13 boys select tournament held in Kinburn this past weekend.

The Plumbers had four wins and no losses to take the title, defeating McNab in the final. Other teams participating were from Stittsville and Quyon.

West Carleton advances to Sunday at U20 Eliminations

West Carleton Electric advanced to Sunday at the Ontario Amateur Softball Association U20 Eliminations in Cobourg based on their three wins and one loss during the first two days of the event.

On Friday night, WC defeated the Oshawa Double Bs 10-3. Gabe Brown threw five innings to earn the win and Noah Fleurie threw two in relief. Conner Hopper had a homer for WC and Alex Strathern was a single away from the cycle with a double, triple and homer.

The first game Saturday morning was a tough test as WC faced the tournament top seed the Rostock Braves. Rostock's club features six players who were recently members of Team Canada U18. The Braves won 14-2 in a game that was 5-2 into the fourth inning. Blake Bramburger threw well for the Electric despite the score.

West Carleton rebounded with a 14-11 win over the Elmira Expos. Fleurie had the complete game win. At one point in the third inning WC was up 12-2, and the scrappy Expos climbed back but the Trics held on for the win in a two hour and forty five minute marathon. A key play in this game was when the Expos elected to intentionally walk three hitter Hopper and clean up hitter Strathern subsequently hit a bases-clearing triple.

The third match of the day was another long game, an eight inning win of 14-10 over the Kaladar Kings on a diamond that didn't have lights and was completed just before darkness set in. Kaladar is comprised of players from Springbrook and Westport teams from 2023. Brown started and threw four innings, Bramburger relieved for two innings, and Fleurie got the win in two innings of relief. WC got out to 5-0 lead at one point only to see things tied at 6 after four. With the game tied at 9 in the bottom of the seventh, the Kings loaded the bases with none out. Fleurie got a pop up, a strike out, then threw out the runner from third who tried a delayed steal of home to put things into extra innings. West Carleton scored five in the top of the eighth and Kaladar could only respond with one, with the game ending when a Kings runner tried to stretch a double into a triple and left fielder Dylan Rorwick threw him out at third.

Next up for West Carleton is Sunday morning game at 9 a.m. vs Plattsville Lightning. Other remaining teams are undefeated Rostock as well as Napanee Express, Chatsworth Longhorns and New Hamburg Mustangs.

The top two teams at the event earn a berth to the U20 Canadian Championship in Carp in August, joining hosts West Carleton and defending champions Napanee as well as teams from Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Quebec, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. 

Canada wins bronze at U18 Men's

Team Canada won bronze with an exciting 2-1 victory over the USA at the Men's U18 World Cup in Hermosillo, Mexico.  Alex McGillivray's two run homer in the sixth was the difference. Conner Hopper of Fitzroy Harbour, member of West Carleton Electric, was on Team Canada.

Japan won gold 8-4 over Mexico, also in a very exciting game, in eight innings decided by a walk off grand slam.

Canada to play USA for Bronze

Canada will play the USA for the bronze medal today (4 p.m. EST) at the U18 Men's World Cup in Hermosillo, Mexico.

Both teams finished the Super Round at 3-2, also tied with Mexico. With the host having defeated both USA and Canada, they advance to the gold medal game vs Japan (7 p.m. EST).
