Orleans leads RA Semi 1-0

OTTAWA—The Orléans Midget Rebels outlasted the Ottawa Valley Raiders last night, winning 2-1 in an eight-inning game. With the win, the Rebels take a 1-0 lead in the RA Centre’s best-of-three semi-finals.

VALLEY CAN’T SOLVE HARGROVE
Rebels’ ace Chad Hargrove pitched an impressive eight-inning one-hitter, in which he registered 10 strikeouts. Hargrove’s one surrendered hit came off the bat of Valley right fielder Lukas Kamps.

Valley’s lone run came in the fifth inning after designated player Shawn Moher reached second on an error. Moher then advanced to third on a Roy Black groundout to the right side of the infield. To everyone’s surprise, Moher then scored—standing up—on a passed ball.

The absence of a few strong Valley hitters was notable. Rich Antunes was absent due to family commitments. Darren Featherstone and Chad Milne were at the International Softball Congress’ Tournament of Champions with the Stittsville 56’ers and Ottawa Team Easton Thunder, respectively. Also, Valley’s leadoff hitter Stéphane Vinette left last night’s game with a pulled groin.

RC PITCHES A GEM
Valley’s anchor Ryan Cox put on yet another stellar performance. He allowed one run through 6 2/3 innings on three hits. He recorded seven strikeouts. The Rebels’ run came in the fifth inning when catcher Matt Bowman hit a solo homerun to left-centerfield.

Valley’s Gord Flannery entered the game to pitch in the top of the seventh inning, with a runner at first and two outs, to pitch to Bowman. Valley’s crafty veteran induced Bowman to pop up in the infield.

EXTRA INNING REQUIRED
After seven regulation innings, the teams remained tied 1-1. The international tiebreaker rule came into effect in the top of the eighth inning. Accordingly, Bowman started as a runner at second base. He advanced to third on a single to leftfield by Hargrove. Valley’s Derek Bergeron made a fantastic play to pick up the ball cleanly and hold Bowman at third base. Bowman then scored on a full-swing bunt that evaded Valley’s infielders, giving the Rebels a 2-1 lead.

Black started as a runner at second base for Valley in the bottom of the eighth inning. With nobody out, he advanced to third on a wild pitch. Unfortunately for Valley, Black remained at third base as Hargrove struck-out three straight Valley batters to end the threat.

Valley and the Rebels clash again on Wednesday night at 7 PM. Valley needs to win to avoid elimination. Valley catcher Tyler Cox commented on the urgency in the post-game debriefing at the SunDeck bar.

“Our backs are against the wall.”
