Valley takes 1-0 lead in RA playoffs

OTTAWA—The Valley Raiders beat CBU Publishing 7-1 on Monday night in Game 1 of the first round of the RA Centre Playoffs. The first round is a best-of-three-games series.

RC GETS START
Valley’s dependable playoff pitcher Ryan Cox got the start on the pitching rubber. He allowed one run on three hits in the first inning. After the first, Ryan Cox shut the door, allowing no more runs until he was replaced.

In the sixth inning, Gord Flannery entered the game to pitch for Valley. In two innings of work, he allowed no runs and recorded four strikeouts.

MILNE SWINGS BIG STICK
Valley’s offence was sluggish to start, as they faced CBU ace Derrick Bulley. Centrefielder Brett Dugan scored Valley’s first run in the second inning. He reached base on a walk and advanced to second base when Rich Antunes dropped down a sacrifice bunt. Dugan scored from second when Lukas Kamps ripped an RBI triple.

Chad Milne carried a big club for Valley on Monday. He hit a solo homerun in the third and a two run homerun in the fourth after Tyler Cox had reached base on a bloop single.
Dugan commented on Tyler Cox’s lucky hit with a facetious tone.

“The blog will read, ‘What a tremendous single!’”

The hits kept on coming after that. In the fifth inning, Stéphane Vinette, Will Mood, Darren Featherstone, and Shawn Moher added hits to give Valley a 7-1 lead.

CBU and Valley will clash again on Wednesday night Aug 9 in Game 2 of the best-of-three-games series.

In other RA playoff action, Team 6 defeated the Rogues to take a 1-0 lead in their series. Jamie Wilson had the pitching win, and Matt Cox took the loss.
