WC Electric "Showcase" Report

Friday 7PM - Quyon Flyers 2 WC Electric 1
See previous post.

Saturday 10AM - Orleans Gators 6 WC Electric 2

Orleans used the long ball with two 2-run bombs in the sixth to break a 2-2 tie and propel the Gators to a 6-2 victory. Chad Hargrove led the Gators, pitching a three hitter, striking out 11, showing excellent control by walking none, and scoring the game winning run.

Fitzroy opened the scoring in the bottom of the first. Jon Daley led off the game with a single off Orleans starter Hargrove, stole second, was sacrificed to third by Trevor Barton, and scored on a Michael Cavanagh RBI ground out.

Orleans responded with two runs in the top of the third, stringing together three consective one-out singles off WC Electric starter Bud Hanlon from the bats of Brendan Werthner, Joel Langford, and Matt Alkerton. Werthner scored on Alkerton's single, while Langford scored on a wild pitch that bounced off umpire Harry McIntyre's shin guard.

WC Electric responded quickly in the bottom of the third. Trevor Barton reached first on a two-out infield fly that was misplayed the Gator's infield. Barton stole second base, and was driven on another Michael Cavanagh RBI single. In WC Electric's first two games, they scored three runs combined - all driven in by shortstop Cavanagh.

Jim Ryan entered to pitch for WC in the fifth where he retired the side in order. However the sixth inning was problematic for the veteran righty, as Orleans scored four runs. Chad Hargrove walked and was driven in by a Max Serre home run. Then Nick Bowman walked and was driven in by a Brendan Werthner home run. Brad Porter then entered to pitch the remainder of the game for Fitzroy.

Saturday 2PM - WC Electric 2 Ottawa Blitz 0

An outstanding pitching performance by Brad Porter helped WC Electric win their only game of the showcase, defeating the Ottawa Blitz by a score of 2-0. Derick Bulley also pitched a strong game in taking the loss for Ottawa. Both teams played defensively well in an error-free game.

WC Electric broke the 0-0 tie scoring in the top of the fourth. Steve "Beef" Johnson reached first on a single, and was sacrificed to second by Todd Clouthier. A clutch RBI single from Jason Armstrong then scored Johnson. Armstrong then showed his speed, stealing second, then third, but was stranded as Adam Brown grounded out to end the inning.

The game's only other run was on a Johnson solo home run to left in the top of the sixth. The next batter Todd Clouthier then stroke a liner to left that had triple written all over it for the speedy Clouthier, but Brett Duggan came up with a diving catch to get the out for the Blitz.

The Blitz had a chance in the bottom of the seventh when Will Mood hit his second single of the game to lead off the inning. However, Duane Bromley hit into a 6-3 double play, as WC shortstop Clouthier scooped the ball, tagged second and threw to a stretching Neil Murphy to complete the DP.
