Stittsville gets two wins at Orleans
from Sam Oliver
The Stittsville 56ers took both ends of a double header on Thursday night in Orleans, winning by scores of 4 – 0, and 4 – 1.
The first game saw Dan Bradley out duel Orleans ace Chad Hargrove for the win. All 4 Stittsville runs came in the top of the 5th inning. Tyler Nystedt led things off with a double, and advanced to third when pinch hitter Dan Jessiman grounded out to the Orleans short stop. The next 56er batter James Holden was hit by a pitch to put runners at the corners with one out. With Scott Herriot batting, Orleans catcher Matt Bowman threw the ball back to Hargrove who unfortunately had his back to the play. The ball sailed into centerfield allowing Nystedt to score and Holden to advance to second. Herriot singled, scoring Holden, and promptly swiped second. Three consecutive walks to John Craig, Darren Featherstone, and Dan Bradley pushed another run across. Sam Oliver then grounded to the right side of the diamond to plate the 4th and final 56er run.
Orleans has threatened in the first inning when Hargrove was hit by a pitch and that was followed by a Matt Bowman single, but Bradley was able to escape the jam by striking out the next Orleans batter.
Matt Bowman tripled to start the Orleans half of the 4th inning, but once again Bradley was able to escape the jam.

Game 2 of the double header saw Dan Bradley once again start for the 56ers, but he would be replaced in the third inning by Darren Featherstone. Orleans countered with Nick Bowman. Stittsville opened the scoring in the bottom of the first. A Scott Herriot walk was immediately followed by a John Craig single putting two men on with no one out. Both runners advanced 60 feet on a wild pitch. After Dan Jessiman flew out to shallow left field, Bradley was able to push Herriot across when he grounded out to short. Bowman was able to escape the jam without further damage.
The 56ers added another run in the 3rd inning. Darren McCartney started things with a hard single. He advanced to second on the Herriot sacrifice bunt. After a John Craig walk, Dan Jessiman singled sharply to center to score McCartney. Once again, Bowman was able to pitch out of the jam with minimal damage.
Orleans answered with a run of their own in the top half of the 4th. Chad Hargrove led things off with a hard hit ball to centerfield that eluded the dive attempt by the 56er centerfielder, putting Hargrove on 3rd with a stand up triple. He wasn’t there long as the next batter, Matt Bowman, collected his third hit of the night, singling to plate the run. Brian Friesen followed this with a walk and a Featherstone wild pitch moved the runners to second and third. With one out Max Serre hit a sharp come backer to Featherstone who alertly caught Matt Bowman, who was wandering a little too far off third base, in a pickle. The 56ers were able to record the rare 1 – 2 – 5 – 6 – 5 for the second out of the inning. The next Orleans batter grounded out to first base to end the inning.
The 56ers added some insurance in the bottom half of the 4th inning. Darren Ladouceur singled and was advanced to second by a well executed bunt by Tyler Nystedt. Mike Barrett then singled putting runners at the corners with one out. With Darren McCartney batting, a wild pitch allowed Barrett to move into scoring position. This proved costly as McCartney singled to score both runners.
