Duguay Sports wins the Trend-Arlington league
Ottawa, ON - Another successful season is in the books for Trend-Arlington Men's Fastball League. The third and deciding game went Wednesday 17 September at Trend-Arlingtong field where Duguay Sports and Lone Star Texas Grill rematched in game three for the second year in a row.
Pierre Boivin (1-1) started for Duguay, a seemingly odd choice since Steve "Slim" Dumouchel struck out 11 of 22 batters just two nights before. He centred the experienced infield of Rick Casey (3B), Eric Leveille (SS), Dumouchel (2B) and John Spero (1B).
Art Henry (3-1) started his sixth game of the playoffs throwing to Super Dave Simmonds. Super looked to redeem himself after a challenging game two, a reflection uncharacteristic of his teams defense that led them to a 15-5 regular season record.
Duguay led off the game maxing out a 5 running inning. Unlike game two, Lone Star threatened but a great catch by Jim Yeldon off Maverick in right field held a dangerous rally to two runs. The slugfest first inning was an indication of things to come since the hitters batted 28 for 63 (.444) against the two pitchers in game three.
Bruce Thibeadeau led off with a single and Craig Casey doubled. Then the gates opened up as a sac fly, two walks and three errors preceded Rick Casey's 2-run single that capped a second five-run inning. Duguay led 10-2 early on. The Boivins shut down any reply from Lone Star and the normally boisterous west-side bench went silent.
Lone Star got two more in the fourth inning, but Leveille's rangey stab stranded two as 1B John Spero held onto the toss, putting Simmonds out by a hair. A comeback was conceivable until Leveille poked a 3-run dinger in the top of seven, and then scooped a wormburner, stepped on second and tossed out O'Sullivan at first and snuffed the life out of the hopes.
Congratulations to Duguay Sports in repeating as Playoff Champions, a core that as essentially three-peated (the first was under the Soulard Multi-service banner). Lone Star finished the successful season 21-8 and will set the party standard at this year's 2008 TAMFL Awards Banquet. Tickets are available for $15 now by calling 613-829-1516 or emailing wfenwick at FHLSim.com.
