WC Electric finish fifth in Elkland

West Carleton Electric competed at the 56th annual Labour Day Fastball Tournament in Elkland, Pennsylvannia, finishing tied for fifth amongst the 14 teams attending.

The Electric started at noon on Saturday, defeating the Jersey Shore (PA) Generals by a score of 3-1. Brad Porter had the win with five innings of shutout ball, while Bud Hanlon had the save working two innings in relief. WC Electric had a bit of trouble scoring runs but three were enough to start out on the winner side of the bracket.

Next up was a game against the Hoffman Rise of Perkasie, PA who had received a bye. The Rise, a 2008 Tournament of Champions team, won 10-4 in a game much closer than the scoreboard indicated. Brad Porter took the loss and Bud Hanlon saw some work in relief. Six of the Rise runs came in one inning to put the game out of reach. Mike Smith had the win for the Rise. Michael Cavanagh had a homerun for West Carleton.

Moving the loser's side of the bracket of the double knockout tournament, meant a Sunday morning game against First Kings of Appleton, PA. West Carleton Electric won this one 4-1, powered by a great game from Bud Hanlon who threw very well for the complete game victory.

This win set up a rematch on Sunday afternoon against Jersey Shore and the Electric again won, this time a 6-0 shutout in which Brad Porter dominated the opponents, allowing only two hits. Michael Cavanagh had another home run in this game. Jersey Shore had a guy named Harry on the slab, affectionately known as "Hair Ball" to his teammates. A scary incident in the game saw a bad hop at second base hit Trevor Barton in the right eye, resulting in a big shiner for #15.

This win meant that for the second year in a row, West Carleton Electric would meet up with I4C Victory in Elkland. Again, for the second year in a row, I4C was victorious, this time winning 6-4 and eliminating WCE. Bud Hanlon had the start and threw well over four innings and Brad Porter took the loss in relief. I4C had New Zealander Darren Rea on the slab for the weekend and had the complete game win. Victory staked out a 6-0 lead over six and a half but WC mounted a comeback in the final frame, scoring four and having the tying run at the plate, but were unable to finish. Kevin McGuire, Kyle Gourgon and pick ups John Dry and Bruce Hackett had key hits for I4C. Shawn Rebertz, Jason Armstrong and lone pick up Joe McCleary had important hits for WC Electric. Trevor Barton showed no ill effects of his black eye as he made a beautiful diving stab and throw to first that elicited a nice round of applause from the sizable crowd that attended the Monday morning game.

I4C went on to finish fourth, losing to Knoxville/Ontario in their next game. Knoxville/Ontario is comprised of players from the Kingston area and from around Knoxville, PA, hence the interesting K/O name and logo.

West Carleton Electric tied with the local Ekland ESA Thunderbellys for fifth.

Shaggy Dog, a tournament team from Erie, PA with Jeremy Manley and Tom Berube throwing won the tournament.
