Jim Bradford Classic at Grafton
Ottawa Team Easton finished second of 17 teams at the Jim Bradford Classic tournament in Grafton this weekend, losing to Cobourg Force in the finals.
Fitzroy Harbour West Carleton Electric went 2-2 and out of the playoff round.
Fitzroy Harbour West Carleton Electric
Fitzroy Harbour WC Electric started off with two losses to remove themselves from contention in the playoff round, but finished with two strong wins.
The draw saw the Electric play Donnacona Blue Sox and Waterdown Hammer, two ISC II ranked teams, back to back at 8:30 and 10:30 on Saturday morning. (No excuses, but that is a tough draw, n'est-ce pas?)
Donnaconna (ISC II #29) won the first one by a score of 8-1 in six innings. Francis Leclair had the win, with relief from Luc Thibeault. Bud Hanlon had the loss and had relief from Steve Cavanagh. Down 2-0 after four and a half innings, the lug nuts loosened in a big way in the fifth for the 'Trics. Up to that point, the Blue Sox had three hits and Hanlon was throwing well, but four errors made for four runs as all four tires blew off and Donnacona went up 6-0. Fitzroy scored their run in the sixth when Trevor Barton hit a solo shot off Thibeault. The Electric loaded the bases on two singles and a walk, but couldn't get another across. Two runs by Donnacona in the bottom of the frame ended the game. Leclair threw five complete, striking out 10, no hits, one walk and two hit batsmen, including one of the helmet of Joel Langford of the Electric.
No rest for Fitzroy as they faced the ISC II #4 ranked Waterdown Hammer immediately following. The Hammer won 8-3. Jimmy Hurst had the win for the Hammer with relief from Tim Neil, while Matt Greer threw for the Electric. The game was tied 3-3 after the third inning, but the big bats of Waterdown pounded out five more runs for the win. Will Lake had a homer for the Hammer. Joel Langford had one RBI and Matt Greer had two RBI for Fitzroy.
In the third game of the day, Fitzroy won 10-5 against Team Ontario, the under 19 team which will be representing the province in PEI in July. Team Ontario had shutout Donnacona 5-0 earlier in the day, but the bats of the Electric came alive in the 4:30 game. Steve Cavanagh pitched the complete game win, while Brendan Roach and Ian Wallwork threw for Team Ontario. Adam Alexander had a two run homer for the midgets. Mitch Taylor hit a three run homer for Fitzroy, his first round tripper in Intermediate play, while Neil Murphy and Steve Johnson had two RBIs and Joel Langford, Matt Greer and Adam Brown all had one RBI each.
WC Electric closed things out on a winning note, defeating Pickering 5-1 on Sunday morning. Bud Hanlon had the complete game win, scattering five hits. Steve Johnson had an RBI on a sacrifice fly in the first and Joel Langford hit a solo homer in the third. With the bases loaded, two out and a full count in the fifth inning, Adam Brown hit a slow roller to short which was thrown in the rhubarb, off the fence and down the right field line scoring all three baserunners to complete the scoring.
Team Easton
Team Easton won their first two games handily, beating Newmarket Stingers Juniors 10-0 and the Stouffville Mennos 9-2.
Easton's third game of Saturday was a beauty as they faced the also undefeated CPI Classics from Dundas at 8:30pm on the main diamond. Easton prevailed by a score of 2-0. Corey Costello had the complete game win, while Jeff Murphy took the loss with relief from Shaun Winship. Cory Morrison had both Easton runs with two solo homers.
Their fourth game of the round robin on Sunday morning against the Oshawa Intermediates was meaningless as they had already advanced. Easton lost 9-2. Kevin Chevrier and Scott Herriott took on pitching duties for the game.
In the semi-finals, Easton played the New York Bombers, winner of the "D" pool, winning 3-2. Corey Costello got the start, throwing to his brother Chad who was catching with a badly swollen ankle. Ryan Cummings had the ball for New York. Costello threw into the fifth, when he gave way to Brad Porter. With the Bombers up 2-0 in the bottom of the seventh, Dan Jessiman doubled and Cory Morrison reached base on a misplayed throw to first. With runners on the corners, Dave Tubman hit a walk off homer for the win and put Easton into the finals.
Easton played Cobourg Force in the finals. Cobourg had defeated Waterdown Hammer in the semi-finals by a score of 2-1, and the Force prevailed in the final by the same score. Kyle Linton had the win, Steve Ketchell the save. Brad Porter threw for Easton. Chad Milne had the Easton RBI.
