Gordie Flannery leads Goodfellow Cleaners to TAFML playoff title

from Wynn Fenwick

One of the virtues of this sopping summer's rain was that Trend Arlington Men's Fastball League playoffs extended to the 28th of September. The 7:00pm game at T-A field between Ed Taylor Shamrocks and Goodfellow Cleaners was one of the latest playoff games in league history.

Goodfellow Cleaners had home field advantage as they looked to clinch the 21st awarding of the Nepean Trophy as playoff champion.

Gord Flannery started for Goodfellow's after a one-game hiatus, opposing Elton Cryderman for Taylor's.

Chris Golden and Andy Ivol led off the scoring coming home on Super Dave Simmonds' 2-run double after Golden was hit by a pitch and Ivol singled with one out. Cryderman left Simmonds on second with two quick groundouts. 2-0 Goodfellows.

Flannery is a strikeout pitcher, and was effective but hittable stranding Mike Gellner's double in the 2nd and struck out only one of the first nine he faced. Team defense was timely, including another line drive stab by Ivol who shone defensively at shortstop.

Ian Wilson doubled to lead off the third followed by Dave Stoke's single and Golden's line out to second. Goodfellow's went up 3-nothing on Ivol's RBI sacrifice fly, and Simmonds was caught stealing by Jack Gellner's gun to end the inning.

Ivan Taylor opened the 3th by drilling a fly ball to centre that was hauled in by Wilson, and James O'Grady worked a walk. Flannery found his velocity and got both Gustavo Sanchez and Darryl Janes to quelch the threat.

From there on out it was all Flannery as he homered in the 5th to make it four-nothing and struck out six of the next nine outs giving up only a line drive to Taylor.

Ivol made the championship a fait accompli when he drilled home Stokes and Golden in the top of 6.

Flannery induced Jack Gellner to ground to Brent White at third and Casey O'Sullivan squeezed it tight bringing many of these Goodfellow players their first championship after several trips to the finals.

Individual player and team awards will be presented at the annual awards banquet which this year will be October 23rd at the St. Laurent location of Lone Star Texas Grill.
