Friday night fastball results in Fitzroy UPDATED

In the doubleheader in Fitzroy Harbour on Friday night, North Gower took 3 of a possible 4 points.

West Carleton Electric 6 North Gower Marlboroughs 6

Game one saw West Carleton Electric and North Gower tie at 6-6. The home side at one point has a 6-1 lead, but squandered it as the Marlies scored 4 in the seventh for the tie.

Bud Hanlon threw the complete game for Fitzroy, while Shannon Borho, Andrew Wiggim and Gord Flannery all threw for North Gower, with the veteran Flannery earning the "tie".

North Gower scored in the top of the first as Anil Hayne's ground out scored Kevin Schonfeld who had singled, moved to second on a wild pitch, and took third on a throwing error. WC Electric responded with two in the bottom half as Neil Murphy continued his hot hitting with a two run homer.

Fitzroy added a run in the second when Dave Bahm reached on a misplayed fly ball and scored after consecutive singles by Jon Daley and Beef Johnson. Borho was removed mid inning and replaced by Wiggim on the slab.

WC pushed the lead to 6-1 in the fourth. Daley and Johnson led off the inning with a pair of walks. Neil Murphy marked his third RBI in the book with a single and Jeff Cavanagh drove in another pair with a double. This ended Wiggin's turn on the slab as the wily veteran Flannery came in to throw and got the Marlies out of the inning.

Anil Hayne's solo shot in the sixth narrowed the lead to four runs for Fitzroy.

North Gower completed the comeback in the top of the seventh. Benoit Boivon led off with a shallow single that was tricky to play in the wind. Nick Bowman then singled up the middle. Derrick Lichti's high fly ball was tricky to play in the swirling wind and became a two RBI triple to give the Marlboroughs some life. After a ground out and a strikeout, Derek Dumond's clutch RBI single narrowed the gap to one. After Lichti moved to second on a wild pitch, the tying run was scored when Anil Hayne hit an infield single deep to shortstop. The throw to first was offline, and Dumond rounded third and scored on an errant attempt at the plate. Hanlon got out of the inning and WC Electric was enable to score in the bottom of the frame, so the game remained tied at 6-6.

Thanks to North Gower for representing in the hall afterward and supporting our sponsor through refreshment sales. We closed the hall just before 1am...and I got up at 5am to do some fishing hoping to erase memories of a not so successful Friday at the ball park. But the fishing was no good either.
