Napanee to have two teams at Junior Nationals

From the Belleville Intelligencer

Napanee swats a double
Town will enter two teams as host of 2011 U23 men's fast-pitch championships
By Paul Svoboda

The 2011 U23 Canadian men's fast-pitch championships are still three months away but Napanee has already swatted a double.

Napanee is the site of the Canadian championships Aug. 8-14 at the Fairgrounds sports complex and it was announced this week that as tournament host and winner of last year's title, the centre can enter two clubs.

The North Key Construction Napanee Express won the Canadian championship in 2010 and have automatically qualified for this year's competition as defending champs. They'll be joined by the Shoeless Joe's Napanee Express as the host team.

Stephen Paul, chairman of the host committee, said having two Napanee teams in the tournament is a bonus for players and supporters. It also marks the first time in the history of the U23 event that the host centre has been allowed to enter two squads.

"We're thrilled to be fielding two teams and it's great for the Napanee fans, great for the tournament and great for the development of fast pitch in Napanee," said Paul. "We have two local teams to cheer for, each with a good opportunity to contend for a medal."

The North Key Construction Express captured the Canadian crown last year with a 6-1 win over the host Nova Scotia Eagles in St. Croix, N.S. They'll compete in the Loughborough League this season, along with the Shoeless Joe's Express.

The high-calibre Loughborough League is celebrating its 50th season this year. Openers were set for tonight.

Softball Canada has held an annual U23 national championship since 1974 with local teams winning on three occasions — the Express in 2010 and 1996, and the North Fredericksburgh Kings in 1986. Overall, Napanee has won five national championships since 1980 (three midget; two junior).

Full tournament passes for this year's U23 competition are $50 and can be purchased at the Strathcona Paper Centre or by calling 613-354-4423. More information is available at www.NapaneeU23.com.
