Blackburn tournament write up
from Eric Rosenquist
The Glen Cairn "Red" squad won the BMFL tournament this past weekend in Blackburn Hamlet. Many thanks to the BMFL organizers for putting on a great event and for having a beer tent and BBQ at the diamond.
The tournament was "open" calibre, meaning any level of pitcher or player was allowed, but it still followed the rec-league style rules that both the Blackburn and Glen Cairn leagues use: unlimited defensive substitutions, and everyone in the line-up hits. The Glen Cairn squad was a mixture of players from the GCMFL with a few pickups from other leagues. The team used a set of red & white jerseys with logos from current sponsor Don Cherry's as well as older jerseys from a few years ago when Local Heroes Kanata sponsored a Glen Cairn team, so the team dubbed itself "Glen Cairn Red".
The Reds made it through the round-robin portion of the tourney with a 3-0 record to win their division. Friday night saw them defeat the Barrhaven Broadway Blues with Cody Price picking up the pitching win and Jason Smith getting the loss. On Saturday afternoon the team defeated the Knights squad from the BMFL with Neil Cooke getting the win and Ryan Chatten taking the loss. Saturday evening's game ended 7-3 for the Reds over the BMFL's Rogues, with Duane Bromley getting the complete game win. Tony MacDonald got the Reds off to a fast start, belting a no-doubt three-run homer to left field in the first inning. Shawn Simzer capped the evening's scoring for the Reds with a solo shot over the top of the tall fence in left center in the top of the 7th.
Sunday's action had the Glen Cairn squad playing the BMFL's Guzzlers in the 11AM semi-final. The Guzzlers are one of the top squads in the BMFL, having won the league playoffs for the past couple of seasons. The Guzzlers jumped out to a quick lead on Glen Cairn starter Cody Price, getting a triple from Jeff Barber followed by an RBI single from Derek Barber. The Reds answered back in the bottom of the 1st when Scott Herriot and Cory Morrison hit back to back doubles. Scott Parsons followed that with an RBI single to make the score 2-1 for Glen Cairn. The Glen Cairn bats stayed hot in the early innings, giving the squad a 6-2 lead after three innings, but the Guzzlers continued to chip away and narrowed the lead to 6-4 after five. Neil Cooke took over the pitching duties for Glen Cairn in the 6th, but the Guzzlers managed to score a pair of runs courtesy of a leadoff triple by Kevin Spears and a one-out triple by Kevin Shonfield. Shonfield then alertly took home moments later on a wild pitch to tie the score before Cooke retired the side. Guzzler pitcher Jeff Barber took over for younger brother Andy Barber in the 6th and managed to keep the score tied at 6 through 7 complete innings. Extra innings saw both pitchers wiggle out of bases-loaded situations in the 8th. Glen Cairn ended the game in the bottom of the 9th when Cory Morrison hit a hard grounder that bounced off the Guzzlers first-baseman into foul territory. That gave Scott Herriot (starting at 2B due to the tie-breaker rule) more than enough time to round third and cross home for the game winning run.
The finals saw a rematch between Glen Cairn and the Knights, who had defeated the Cree Nation Fireballers in the other semi-final behind the pitching of Ryan Chatten. Neil Cooke had the ball for Glen Cairn with Brad Porter toeing the rubber for the Knights. The scrappy Knights hitters managed to make the most of their chances in the early going, touching up Cooke for 5 runs in the first four innings courtesy of home runs by Matt Edwards and Guy Millette, the latter being a three-run shot in the top of the 4th that looked like it would put the game out of reach for the Knights. Cooke finished the 4th without further damage and handed the ball over to Cody Price to start the 5th. Price shut down the Knight hitters in the 5th getting 3 strikeouts and stranding a 1-out single, and that seemed to spark the Glen Cairn hitters. Scott Herriot hit a solo shot to put the Reds on the board in the bottom of the 5th, then with two out, Scott Parsons, Duane Bromley, and Monty Davis hit consecutive singles to make the score 5-2 after five. Hoping that Knights starter Brad Porter would be feeling the effects of the hot sunny day as much as anyone in the park, the Reds showed great patience at the plate in the bottom of the 6th, getting a leadoff walk from Cody Price, going to a full count in a pair of strikeouts that followed, and then getting runners at the corners when catcher Terry Redden reached base on an error. With the top of the Reds order coming to the plate, the Knights surprised many at the park by electing to pitch to Dan Loney rather than intentionally walk him to load the bases with two out. The move paid off for the Knights as Porter got Loney to ground out to end the threat and keep the score 5-2 heading into the 7th. Cody Price shut down the Knights in the top of 7th with a pair of Ks and a fly-out, putting the Reds back on the sticks for one last time, down by three runs.
Shawn Simzer started the inning by legging out an infield hit, barely beating the throw at first. Scott Herriot then hit his second home run of the game to make the score 5-4 with no one out. Cory Morrison followed Herriot with a single, took second on a passed ball, and scored the tying run via Scott Parsons' RBI single. With the game tied and no one out, Reds batter Duane Bromley bunted Parsons to second to get the winning run in scoring position. Monty Davis capped a 3-for-3 day by hitting a single that scored Parsons and gave the Glen Cairn squad a 6-5 come from behind victory and the tournament championship.
