West Carleton Electric wins 4-3 over Carp I4C Victory
West Carleton Electric eked out a 4-3 win over Carp I4C Victory in GOFL play on Tuesday night in Fitzroy Harbour.
Andy Barber had the win for WC, while Cody Price took the loss.
Carp started off the scoring in the first when Kevin McGuire hit a solo homer with two out.
Victory pushed across another run in the third. Price led off with a single and was moved to second base on a Shawn Simzer sacrifice bunt. Price moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a passed ball.
The Electric answered back with three in the bottom of the frame. With one out, Ryley Burns, a call up from the Fitzroy Harbour League, stroked a solo shot on the first GOFL pitch he has seen in this season to make it 2-1. Andy Barber then reached on an infield error, and stole second. Jeff Barber singled and when the throw came in to the plate to hold Andy at third, Jeff alertly took second base. Jeff Cavanagh's 2RBI single scored both Barber brothers to make it 3-2 for the home team.
Carp tied things on the fifth on a bizarre play. Cody Price lead off being hit by a pitch. Price took second and third on a wild pitch on which Fitzroy catcher Troy Wilson tweaked his sore knee. Barber struck out the next two batters. Fitzroy elected to intentionally walk Kevin McGuire, who promptly took second uncontested. Then as a pitch got away from Wilson, Price broke toward home, and McGuire took off for third - but Price went back for third, leaving McGuire scrambling back to second. When the 'Trics tried to get McGuire at the two bag, Price took home to tie the game. A subsequent fly ball to right ended the threat.
The game winning run was scored by Jeff Barber on a solo shot in the bottom of the fifth, finalizing the scoring at 4-3.
The Caveman's Choice was tough in this one. It could go to Don Barber, the "Barber-Papa" who bailed out the 'Trics when short players by appearing in his GOFL debut in left field. It could also go to Ryley Burns who hit a bomb in his first GOFL appearance of the season. But the award will go to Troy Wilson who found out that he would be catching 10 minutes before game time and performed well behind the dish on short notice.
