Kars edges West Carleton Electric 7-6

As part of some "neutral site" GOFL games taking place on Thursday, Kars Aces 'hosted' West Carleton Electric in Carp and came away with a 7-6 win.

Cory Alkerton had win in 2/3 inning relief of starter Jamie Smith. Andy Barber took the loss in relief of Steve Cavanagh.

Kars got out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Kristian Knapp singled, and took second when the ball was misplayed in the outfield. Nick Ellis then doubled, scoring Knapp. When Cory Morrison grounded out to the pitcher, Ellis went to third and drew a throw, which was errant and he scored a second run.

The Aces extended the lead to 4-0 in the third. Jeff Hopkins doubled to start the inning. After a strikeout, Ellis hit a fly ball deep to left. Hopkins tagged up and beat the throw to get to third. Morrison then stroked a two run homer for Kars to push the lead to four.

After five crafty innings by Smith in which he only allowed one single, the Electric finally put a couple of hits together in the sixth. Jon Daley doubled to lead things off, and scored on Andy Barber's triple. Two ground outs ended the inning.

Andy Barber had come in to pitch in the fourth and thrown two clean innings, but the Aces changed that in their part of the sixth. Morrison led off with a single. After a strikeout, Andy Davey walked to put two on. Barber was able to get another strikeout, but Danny Powers singled to score Morrison, then Smith singled to score Davey and the lead was extended to 6-1.

Down five in the top of the seventh, the Electric didn't roll over, but instead tied the game and sent 11 men to the plate. Derek Barber led off with a single moved to second on a passed ball and scored on a Jeff Cavanagh RBI single. Smith got the next batter to strike out but not before Cavanagh moved to second on a wild pitch. Dave Bahm popped up for what looked to be the second out of the inning, but it was misplayed and runners were on first and second. Steve Cavanagh singled to load the bases, resulting in a pitching change and Cory Alkerton coming in to throw for Kars. Consecutive walks to Daley and Andy Barber narrowed the gap to 6-4. After a shallow fly out to right was caught on the runner held at third, Jeff Barber's hard hit ball to short squeaked through to score Steve Cav and Daley to tie the game at 6. Derek Barber walked to load the bases once again, but a hard hit ground by Jeff Cav was fielded cleanly by Alkerton to end the top half tied at six.

Kars however responded to get to the win in the bottom of the seventh. Knapp hit a grounder to short, which wasn't fielded in time to get the speedster at first. Ellis sac bunted Knapp to second, and Morrison walked to bring Chad Milne to the plate. Milne's tailing off hand hit to left field was enough to score Knapp and end the game at 7-6 on a walk off.

For his great job pitching, Jamie Smith earns the Cavenan's Choice as player of the game
