Carp 9 Barrhaven 3 - DETAILS
from Eric Rosenquist
On a hot breeze-less night in Carp, I4C Victory got
contributions from some Cornwall-area players and posted a 9-3 win over
Barrhaven Broadway Blues.
Cody Price earned the pitching win while Paul Ceppi took the loss.
Carp took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Eric
Colvin hit a one-out double to the fence. Kevin McGuire, out of the lineup due
to a bruised catching hand, pinch ran for Colvin who was playing 1B for the
shorthanded I4C squad despite a nagging ankle injury. Carp left fielder Shawn
Simzer followed Colvin with an RBI single to put the home side up 1-0. After a
strikeout, catcher Joe Murray moved Simzer to third with a single and then
shortstop Curtis Scurr walked to load the bases, but Barrhaven pitcher Paul
Ceppi got the next batter to pop up to end the threat.
Barrhaven answered with a run of their own in the top of the
second. Second baseman Kevin Williams hit a one-out double, advanced to third
on a throwing error that allowed Lyndsay Medynski to reach safely, and came
home on a Steve Edgerton ground-out.
Carp scored four in their half of the second inning. Third
baseman Jason Woodside started things with a solo shot to right field, then 2B
Darry Beck took a walk and CF Dan Loney followed with a single. Loney was
making his first GOFL appearance since suffering a separated shoulder in mid
June. Beck, Loney, and Woodside all hail from the Cornwall area and will be
attending the 2013 World Masters Games in Torino Italy with several members of
the I4C squad. With one out and two men on, Shawn Simzer and pitcher Cody Price
hit back-to-back doubles to make the score 5-1 Carp.
Barrhaven narrowed the gap in the top of the third when Rob
Soublier took a lead-off walk and Joe Allen singled. Soublier was then picked
off heading for third on a passed ball, but Allen moved to second on the same
play and was driven home by a Don Cox single. Carp pitcher Cody price got out
of the inning courtesy of a fielder's choice and a strikeout.
In the bottom half of the third, the Cornwall connection
added another pair of runs for Carp. Woodside, Beck, and Loney all hit singles
with one out.
The score remained 7-2 until Kevin Williams hit a solo home
run in the top of the 6th. Carp answered with two insurance runs in the bottom
of the sixth when Curtis Scurr was hit by a pitch, Adam Fleming drew a walk,
and Jason Woodside just missed his second home run of the night when the ball
bounced off the top of the centre field fence and back into play for a triple.
For his great night in the batter's box, Jason Woodside gets
the nod as the Caveman's Choice player of the game.
