Kars 3 I4C 3
In the first game of the Kars Aces -
I4C doubleheader on Wednesday night in Manotick, Luke Severson pitched for
Kars while Andrew Putnam pitched for I4C. Kars got on the board quickly in
the top of the first inning. With one out Cory Morrison singled and
after a fly out Chad Milne walked, putting two runners on base with two
out. Matt Alkerton then jumped on the first pitch he saw launching a
long home run to left field giving Kars a 3-0 lead. I4C managed to get one run
back in their half of the first inning and then later tied the game in the
bottom of the third inning on Andrew Putnam's long two-run home run to
left field.
After the early runs, both pitchers
settled in with neither team able to get anything going on offence. I4C
came closest to breaking the tie in the bottom of the sixth
inning, getting a runner as far as third base with two out, but could not
score the go ahead run. After seven innings, the game ended in a 3-3 tie.
Kars 8 I4C 8
In the second game of the
doubleheader, Brad Porter and Neil Cooke were the starting pitchers. Like
Kars in the first game, I4C got on the board quickly in this one, scoring
three times with two out to take an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first
inning. Kars got one run back in their half of the first inning. Nick
Ellis led off with a triple and Cory Morrison reached base after being hit
by a pitch. With one out, Chad Milne laced a ground ball up the
middle for what looked like a single, but Kevin McGuire made a great
diving play to stop the ball and then flip to second to force out Morrison.
Ellis scored on the play.
I4C scored one run in the the top of
the second inning. Kars cut into I4C's lead in the third inning, scoring twice.
Ellis doubled to start the inning and moved to third on a fly out. After a
strike out, Milne sliced a high fly ball down the line in shallow
left field that was misplayed by the hardcharging I4C fielder, allowing Milne
to reach base and Ellis to score. Matt Alkerton then singled to score
Milne.
I4C stretched their lead to 8-3
scoring two runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings, and chasing Porter
from the game, who was relieved by Severson. In the bottom of the fifth, Shane
McNish relieved Cooke. Morrison and Lukas Kamps both walked and then Milne
reached on a fielder's choice that erased Kamps. With two out, Kurtis Summers
stroked a triple to score Morrison and Milne. James Shaw then walked, but
McNish escaped further damage by striking out the next batter.
Down 8-5, Kars batted around in
the bottom of the sixth inning. Severson led of with a double just inside
the left field line, Ellis then walked and Morrison reached on an error
that scored Severson. Kamps then walked to load the bases. The next batter,
Milne, hit a hard comebacker that McNish was able to snare and
then elected to throw to first to get the out, allowing Ellis to score
from third. With two out, Summers reached on an error that allowed Morrison to
score to tie the game 8-8. Kars loaded the bases again when J. Shaw walked, but
McNish preserved the tie by striking out the next batter to end the
game.
