Ottawa Valley As beat West Carleton Electric 7-6
The Ottawa Valley As got out to a 6-0 lead and prevailed with a 7-6 win in Greater Ottawa Fastball League action in Fitzroy Harbour on Tuesday night.
Todd "Willy White Shoes" Wilson went the distance for the win, while Steve Cavanagh took the loss in relief of Jon Daley.
Daley was pressed into service with his first GOFL start, and didn't get a lot of defensive help in the first inning. Steve Frost lead off with a single. Clayton Vance's bunt was misplayed, resulting in Frost scoring and Vance ending up on third after two errors. A ground out by Lindsay Medysnki scored the speedy Vance to put the As up 2-0. Cavanagh took over pitching duties in the second.
Valley got another run in the third. To start, Frost's high fly ball to left field dropped in putting Frosty on third. Vance's single scored Frost and the visitors were up 3-0.
Ottawa Valley rallied for three more in the fifth. Vance reached base when the third baseman had to rush the throw and missed the target. After a pop up, Adam Rueckwald hit an infield single deep to short, then Kyle Couvieau walked to load the bases. Ryley Burns came in to pinch hit - his dribbler down the line scored the speedy Vance and the Trics were unable to make an out. The next batter, Graham Wilson stroked a single which scored another two runs to make it 6-0. Cavanagh got out of the inning with a couple of ground balls.
WC had three consecutive singles in the fifth with two out, but a run was erased at the plate, killing the rally.
After White Shoes kept the Electric off the sheet for the first five innings, the bats finally came alive in the sixth for the Trics. With one out, Mike Cavanagh singled. Jeff Cavanagh's ground ball was misplayed, allowing Mikey to score. Dave Bahm then hit a sharp grounder that was fielded, but as the As tried to turn the double play, it was bobbled and both men were safe. Adam Brown then singled, to score the JCav. After six complete it was 6-2.
A key decision by veteran As manager Terry Boyd proved to be pivotal in the seventh. Shane Boyd (Terry's son) entered the game to pinch hit in the seventh, and stroke a solo homer making it 7-2 and scoring an important run.
The Trics rallied in the bottom of the final frame but just fell short. Daley started the rally with a single, followed by a walk to Trevor Barton. Neil Murphy dropped a single in to score Daley, and took second when the outfielder hesitated getting the ball in. Mike Cavanagh's single scored Barton, and he also managed to get to second on the throw in. After two pop ups, Brown's double to the fence scored two more to make it a 7-6 game. Wilson sealed the win with a strike out.
