West Carleton Electric holds on for 6-5 win over Ottawa Valley As
West Carleton Electric staked out an early lead and held for a 6-5 win over the Ottawa Valley As in Greater Ottawa Fastball League play in Carp on Thursday night.
Andy Barber earned the win, while Steve Cavanagh got the save in an inning of relief. Todd Wilson took the loss, with Adam Rueckwald throwing well in relief.
West Carleton put up a four run inning in the second. Shawn Rebertz lead off with a chopper single. Neil Murphy then doubled. Steve Cavanagh's pop up was misplayed to load the bases. A walk to Charlie Ross scored a run. After a pop out, Andy Barber's single drove in two runs, followed by a Trevor Barton sacrifice fly to make it 4-0.
WC added a fifth run in the third. Jeff Cavanagh singled, moved to second on a grounder, moved to third on Neil Murphy's infield single, an scored on Steve Cavanagh's sacrifice fly.
The As got two back in the bottom of the third. Kyle Couvieau and Gavan Boyd both walked. Adam Rueckwald drive in Couvieau, and Steve Frost's ground out scored G Boyd.
The Electric got what turned out to be the game winning run in the fourth. Dave Bahm lead off with a single, which was followed by a walk to Barber. This prompted the pitching change for starter Wilson to give way to Rueckwald. Rueckwald got two fly balls, but a clutch single by Jeff Cavanagh scored Mike Cavanagh who was running for the catcher Bahm to make it 6-2.
Valley got another two back in the fourth. After a strike out, Shane Boyd reached on an error and Clayton Vance singled. When the Electric tried to pick off Boyd at third, he scored on an overthrow. Walks to Couvieau and Gavan Boyd loaded the bases. A grounder to third erased a runner at the plate but a walk to Frost then made it 6-4.
The home team got things within a run in the sixth. Vance walked, and moved to second on a wild pitch. A ground out put him on third. Gavan Boyd's third walk of the game put runners on the corners. Vance scored when the Electric tried to throw Boyd out stealing second. Barber was able to get a pop up and strike out to the end the threat.
After the Electric failed to score in the top of the sevent, Steve Cavanagh came it to close the door in the bottom of the final inning and earn the save.
