Tavistock wins gold at the U23 Men's Nationals
The Tavistock Merchants won gold at the Softball Canada U23 Men's national championship in Carp on Sunday, defeating the Owen Sound Selects 10-2 in the all Ontario final. Reese Yantzi, who was named the playoff round MVP was the winning pitcher while Riley Manion, who had earned Top Pitcher honours in the qualifying round took the loss with relief from Mac Mulvey and Owen Torrie.
Delisle (Saskatchewan) Fort Protection Pride were the bronze medalists, losing to the silver medalist Selects earlier in the day.
Other teams competing in the event were Team Quebec, Newfoundland Physio & Co., Alvinston (Ontario) Junior Aces and the host Ottawa Valley Chiefs.
After hot weather all week, the final day was plagued with rain, and the games were signficantly delayed, but the hard working volunteer grounds crew (pictured below) did an incredible amount of work to ensure the diamonds remained playable on Sunday.
Congratulations to the organizing committee who after years of COVID delays pulled off the tournament successfully.
