OTTAWA--The visiting Valley Raiders clashed with the first-place Quyon Flyers on Wednesday evening at the RA Centre. The Flyers came out victorious, beating Valley by a slim 1-0 margin.

RACOON FOOLS RAIDERS
Matt “Racoon” Greer pitched a complete 7-inning shutout for the Flyers. Valley’s offence threatened in the fourth when Valley loaded the bases. However, Greer pitched out of the jam when he struck out the RA Centre’s most feared hitter Will Mood for the third out of the inning. Valley’s offence was foiled again in the fifth inning when Tyler Cox was stranded at third. Valley’s francophone leftfielder Stephane Vinette expressed the team’s frustration.

hostie tabernacle.”

FLANNERY TAKES UNDESERVED LOSS
Gord Flannery started on the toe slab for Valley. He pitched very effectively, giving up only one run over four innings. The Flyer’s only run came in the fourth inning when replacement catcher Shawn Laframboise ripped a double to centerfield. Quyon ace Matt Greer then helped his own cause by smashing a double to centerfield that allowed Laframboise to score. Valley’s youthful head-case Ryan Cox relieved Flannery, pitching two scoreless innings in the fifth and sixth innings. Quyon’s final at-bat in the bottom of the seventh was not required.

Valley’s pitching staff was very strong on Wednesday night. Both Flannery and Ryan Cox could have easily come away with a win had Valley’s offence produced any runs. After the game, veteran pitcher Gary Cavanagh explained Valley’s pitching strategy.

“I told Richie that Ryan needs to get some work in relief. It’s a different experience that will make him a better pitcher.”
