Pontiac over Shawville 6-1, Royals to meet Micksburg in UOVMFL finals
from Shawn Laframboise
The Pontiac Royals advanced to the UOVMFL finals with their win over the Shawville Athletics last night. Todd Hearty (1 - 1) got the loss, pitching the complete game. Lenny Burger toed and tapped the rubber for the Royals for the second game in three nights. Burger went seven strong allowing only one run which was cashed in by the Shawville RBI specialist Al Kuehl in the seventh inning.
The Royals capitalized on a few early Shawville errors to jump out to a quick lead. In the second inning, Lenny Burger led off with a single. On the ensuing bunt, the ball was overthrown to first, advancing Burger to third. He then scored on a Travis Dorzek ground ball. Pontiac added a couple more runs in the third to jump out to a 3 - 0 lead.
The Royals added two more in the fifth to increase the lead to 5 - 0. Burger continued to throw well mowing down the Shawville batters one after another. Manager Tim Ferrigan made sure to keep his team in the game, stressing the need for another insurance run in the top of the seventh, because 5 can never be considered enough.
After a Shawn Laframboise base hit up the middle, he advanced to second on a passed ball, and to third by way of a ground out from Dorzek. Matt "Pommer" Romain came through with an RBI single to put the score at 6 - 0. Matt Greer crushed a Todd Hearty offering that was high and deep to left, however a valiant effor by Jeff Drisner to scale the fence and make the grab saved two runs, and kept the deficit at 6 for the A's.
In the bottom of the seventh, the A's threatened right away with Darron Barr reaching base on an error. Jeff Tanguay then walked to put runners on first and second, with no out. A passed ball advanced Barr and Tanguay to third and second respectively. Jamie Armstrong brought his stick to the plate next, and just missed as he crushed a high fly ball to center field that would've still had a chance if it weren't for the wind blowing in. With the runners thinking it was gone, they didn't tag up and no runs scored. Kuehl came up next, and didn't disappoint his teammates, as he broke the A's scoreless streak that was at 13 innings, with an RBI groundout to first base.
In a short interview after the game, I asked Kuehl if he's been doing anything special with his stance to improve his hitting and he replied, "No nothing, just doing my job, cashing in runs as usual". Burger then proceeded to fan Drisner to end the game, and the series.
The Royals will now take on the Micksburg Twins for the UOVMFL championship. Schedule to be announced.
