The Carp I4C Victory was short on players and short on energy last Thursday night in Greater Ottawa Fastball League (GOFL) action at the Carp Fairgrounds. The result was a 10-3 pasting at the hands of the Sttitsville 56ers who did it via the long ball with four home runs in the game.

The game started out as a sloppy affair for both clubs. After striking out the first two batters of the game, Paul Ceppi showed no ill effects from a nagging hip injury that had kept him out of the line-up for nearly four weeks. Then an error by Carp player/assistant coach, Eric Rosenquist who had been pressed into duty at second base, allowed Dan Jessiman to get aboard. Next up to the plate was Ryan Bond who hit a two run shot off the light standard in left centrefield to give Stittsville an early 2-0 lead.

Carp bounced back in the bottom of the first when Shawn Houle led off with a single and stole second. Al Read then reached on an error by 56er second baseman, Todd Sleigh and Read then stole second. With runners at second and third, Trevor Wood hit a 2 RBI single to tie the game. Eric Colvin was now at the plate with Wood at first when a strange play occurred. Colvin thought it was ball four and started to head to first with Wood starting to walk towards second. However, the plate umpire had called the pitch a strike and now Wood was caught off the base with the ball in the hands of 56er pitcher, Dan Bradley. An errant throw to second by Bradley to catch Wood went into centrefield where it then eluded Dan Jessiman and rolled to deep centrefield allowing Wood to score and make it 3-2 Carp after one inning of play.

In the top of the second, with one out, Bradley walked and moved to second on a liner off the bat of Scott Jessiman that hit the glove of third baseman, Read and rolled away from him. Scott Herriot then singled to score Bradley and tie the game. A wild pitch moved Jessiman to third and Herriot to second followed by a John Craig single to score Jessiman with Herriot moving to third. Craig stole second and with two runners in scoring position, Dan Jessiman hit a sacrifice fly to centre, scoring Herriot and making the score 5-3 56ers after one and half innings of play.

Stittsville broke things wide open in the top of the fourth sending nine players to the plate. With one out, Craig singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Then Dan Jessiman hit a two run home run for his third RBI of the game. After Ryan Bond singled, Carp Head Coach, Shawn Williams decided to make a change having seen Ceppi throw enough pitches in his first game back in nearly a month. Wood came in form right field to relieve Ceppi despite the fact that he was experiencing some stiffness in his shoulder. 56ers player/coach, Sam Oliver greeted him with a two run blast to make it 9-3 Stittsville. But the 56ers didn’t stop the home run derby there. Next up was Darren Featherstone who will play with Carp at the ISC II Tournament of Champions in Kitchener/Cambridge in August. On this night, Carp would have preferred Featherstone to be playing with them as he launched another home run to end the scoring at 10-3. Carp managed but one base runner in the fourth and fifth innings, a walk to Rosenquist and conceded via the league mercy rule after five complete innings of play.

For the 56ers at the plate, Craig was 2-3 with a walk, a stolen base, a run scored and an RBI. Bond was 2-3 with a single, home run, two RBIs and a run scored while Dan Jessiman was 1-2 with a home run, a sacrifice fly, reached on an error, two runs scored and three RBIs. Stittsville left seven runners on base.

For Carp, Houle was 2-3 with a stolen base and a run scored. Wood was 1-2 with 2 RBIs. Carp left two runners on.

On the mound, Bradley (4-3-2) got the win while Ceppi (3-3) took the loss. Bradley threw five innings and gave up three runs, one earned, on three hits. He walked one and struck out five. Ceppi threw 3 1/3 innings and gave up eight runs, seven earned, on seven hits while walking two and striking out seven. In relief, Wood threw 1 2/3 innings and gave up two runs on two hits. He walked two and struck out two.

Carp’s next home game is Thursday, July 12th with a special 9:00 PM start time against West Carleton rival, Fitzroy Harbour, West Carleton Electric. The game will be preceded by a 7:00 PM game between Ottawa Team Easton Thunder and the Stittsville 56ers. At this time, the Greater Ottawa Fastball League (GOFL) is planning on having Terry Marcotte of CTV Ottawa Sports on hand to do a story about the league and its players as well as to possibly participate in one of the two games in a limited role. Come on out to catch the action and have a chance to be captured on television.
