WC Electric come back to win 5-4 over Quyon Flyers

In the first game of the Harbour Days double header, the host West Carleton Electric faced their cross-border foes (and friends) from Quyon. WC Electric prevailed with a 5-4 victory in the bottom of the seventh, which kept the good-sized crowd on-hand on the edge of their seats and happy with the results.

Jim Ryan had the complete game win for Fitzroy Harbour, while Matt Greer took the loss for Quyon.

Quyon score the game’s first run in the top of the first. Dennis McCleary led off with a walk. After his brother Joe struck out, Joran Graham came to the plate for the Flyers and hit a liner that struck WC pitcher Ryan and resulted in a base hit. After Nick Armitage popped out, Matt Greer was then hit by a pitch. Struggling with what seemed like a tight strike zone, JR then walked a run in as Ben Younge drew a bases loaded walk.

The Flyers held their 1-0 lead until the bottom of the second. Electric catcher Beef Johnson hit a single to lead off the inning. After Neil Murphy struck out, Trevor Barton hit a home run to centre field that was unofficially measured at 235 ft 3 inches. There was a subsequent single by Adam Brown and a walk to Jon Daley, but Greer was able to pitch out of the inning with the score 2-1 for the home side.

There was no further scoring until the sixth, as Ryan starting taking command and getting several Ks, including striking out the side in the fourth, while Greer induced several ground balls to keep WC Electric off the sheet.

In the top of the sixth, Jordan Kearns led off with a walk for the Flyers. Shawn Laframboise laid down a sac bunt to move him to second, and then Luke Young also drew a walk. After Dennis McCleary struck out, big brother Joe then hit a deep fly ball to right. As this game was played on the Fitzroy Harbour “upper diamond”, the grey monster usually in play in right was not a factor. WC right fielder Todd Clouthier had the ball tracked at the fence, jumped up for the catch and had the ball tip off the end of his glove and go over the wall for a three run shot for Big Joe.

Down 4-2 in the bottom of the sixth, Shawn Rebertz led off with a solo home run to draw WC Electric within one.

With no further runs for the home side in the sixth, and the Flyers going down 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh, Fitzroy went into the bottom of the seventh hoping to score two to win the game for their assembled fans.

Adam Brown led off the seventh with a walk. As Jon Daley laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Brown to second, the ball was misplayed and thrown into the Fitzroy bench, so runners were on second and third. Todd Clouthier grounded out to second, but this brought home Brown for the tying run. After Mike Cavanagh popped out, clean up hitter Shawn Rebertz came to the plate. With two out, a full count, and the winning run on third, Rebertz stroked a pitch to deep right centre for a walk off single to win the game, as the Harbour fans cheered their approval for the exciting finish.

Matt Greer threw the entire game for Quyon, allowing five runs of which three were earned, five hits, walking four and striking out three. The Flyers made two errors.

Jim Ryan had the complete game win for Fitzroy Harbour, throwing seven innings, allowing four runs, all earned, six hits, walking five, hitting one batter and striking out a season-high 13 Flyers batters. The 'Trics made no errors.
