Easton and Stittsville tie - with details
from Sam Oliver
A tight battle between the 56ers and Team Easton ended in a 4 – 4 tie on Tuesday night in Stittsville. Dan Konkle went the distance for Easton giving up 4 runs (3 earned) on 6 hits, walking 3, while striking out 13. Darren Featherstone pitched all seven innings for Stittsville, also allowing 4 runs (2 earned), on 3 hits, walking 4, and striking out 6.
Easton opened the scoring in the 4th inning. Cory Morrison hit a chopper towards second for an infield single. Randy Peck then hit a high pop up to short stop. Dan Jessiman made the catch and attempted to double Morrison off at first. The throw was errant and found the Easton dugout and Morrison was awarded third base on the play. With pat O’Connor at the plate, a Featherstone offering in the dirt found its way to the screen allowing Morrison to score from third.
The 56ers scored three in the top of the 6th to take a 3 – 1 lead. John Craig drew a one out walk, and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Dan Jessiman hit a clutch two out single to score Craig. Ryan Bond then hit a liner to right that eluded the diving Morrison allowing Jessiman to score from first, and Bond to reach third standing up. Darren Featherstone then doubled to score Bond. Konkle was able to get the next Stittsville batter to ground out to end the inning.
Easton answered with two runs to tie the game in the bottom half of the 6th. Kevin Chevrier led things off with a grounder to third that was mishandled allowing the speedy Chevrier to reach first. Morrison walked to put runners on first and second with no one out. Featherstone K’ed the next Easton batter bringing Pat O’Connor to the dish. He stroked a Featherstone pitch off the right field wall, missing a home run by a couple of feet. The triple was enough to score both Chevrier and Morrison to tie the game. Featherstone was able to get the next two Easton batters to end the inning.
Stittsville regained the lead in the top of the 7th. Tyler Nystedt reached on error to start things off. Despite striking out the next two 56er batters, Konkle delivered a wild pitch that allowed Nystedt to reach second. It would prove costly as John Craig hit a clutch single to score Nystedt. Craig advanced to second on the throw to the plate, and he ambitiously tried to sneak third as well, but was alertly thrown out to end the inning.
Easton finished the scoring in the bottom of the 7th. Lukas Kamps reached first on a bad throw by the 56er second baseman. Scott Marion singled to put runners on the corners with no outs. The next batter Dave Tubman lined out to short and Marion was caught straying too far from first for the double play. Chevrier then hit a chopper that was fielded cleanly by Featherstone, but his throw hit the speedy base runner allowing him to reach and Kamps to score.
